The fact College Game Day is broadcasting from Iowa City is a bad omen. The only times College Game Day broadcasted from Iowa City, the Hawkeyes were defeated, and both times it was Ohio State delivering the licking.
Well I'm not hanging my hat on anything those dupes and dweebs at Game Day are involved with

Been quite a while since I looked up the stat, but I think the last time Iowa beat Ohio State and Michigan in the same season was 1962.
I was curious so I looked it up.  1962 isn't just the most recent time that the Hawkeyes beat the Buckeyes and Wolverines in the same season, it is the ONLY time the Hawkeyes beat Ohio State and Michigan in the same season.

Part of the problem is syncing up schedules when Iowa is good with years that Iowa plays both Ohio St and Michigan, and even in those years, there still is only about a 1 in 4 chance Iowa wins both games.
This is definitely a big part of it.  Even ignoring the "when Iowa is good" qualifier, they really haven't played both in the same season as frequently as I would have assumed.

In the 85 seasons since the Germans Bombed Pearl Harbor (1942-2026) the Hawkeyes only played both in the same season 34 times.  Here are the results of regular season Iowa vs tOSU and M:
  • 29 years 0-1, most recently 2024
  • 17 years 0-2, most recently 2022
  • 13 years 1-1, most recently 2013
  • 11 years 0-0, most recently 2025
  • 9 years 1-0, most recently 2017
  • 2 years 0-1-1, most recently 1964
  • 1 year 0-0-1, most recently 1947
  • 1 year 0-0-2, 1988 which was Iowa's last tie against both
  • 1 year 2-0, 1962
  • 1 year TBD, 2026 will be either 2-0 or 1-1.

If you count the two times that Iowa lost to Connor Stallions' cheating machine in the B1GCG that converts two of the 0-0 seasons to 0-1.

From 1981-present the Hawkeyes have been reasonably competitive against the Wolverines but not so much against the Buckeyes:
  • 12-18 against Michigan
  • 5-20 against Ohio State

Interestingly, Iowa's best stretch against the Buckeyes and Wolverines was immediately followed by their worst.

Their best:
From 1958-1962 Iowa went:
  • 3-2 against tOSU - won in 59, 60 and 62; lost in 58 and 61
  • 2-1 against M - won in 58 and 62, lost in 61, didn't play in 59 and 60

After beating both in 1962 the Hawkeyes went 20 seasons without a win over the Buckeyes (0-16 from 1963-1982) and 18 seasons without a win over the Wolverines (0-9-1 from 1963-1980).  Altogether, between the wins over both in 1962 and beating Michigan in 1981 the Hawkeyes went 0-25-1 against the Buckeyes and Wolverines.

Still missing Nebraska/Oklahoma settling things every year in your elite 8? Well at least you got 1/2 a one in the Big 12. Or so my Michigan coorespondants tell me
since tOSU controls the league office, I understand your motivation to defend their scheduling practices

If that was the case then the League Office would have come down a little alot harder on some recent discrepancies from member intitutions

Yeah its weird.  I know Iowa didn't beat both in their Rose Bowl seasons of 81, 85 and 90.  But I assumed there was a season like 1983 where Iowa beat both teams.  Guess not.

Iowa  Shoulda coulda have beat Ohio st in 1990 but blew a late score lead and OSU scored in last minute to win.   1988 was the famous Hawk-Ties season.  3 tie games total in Big Ten play.  Iowa shoulda coulda have beat OSU in 2009 and 2010 too but Iowa just couldn't pull out close games in OT and 4Q.

Since 2010 Iowa and Ohio St just have not played much.

It seems like the 8-2 record overstates the gap because Ohio State has won all the close games, sorted be MoV/MoL:
  • OSU by 44 in 22
  • OSU by 28 in 24
  • OSU by 25 in 05
  • OSU by 21 in 06
  • OSU by 10 in 13
  • OSU by 9 in 03
  • OSU by 3 in 09
  • OSU by 3 in 10
  • Iowa by 26 in 04
  • Iowa by 31 in 17

So Iowa has two blowout wins and Ohio State has four but the gap is bigger because Ohio State is 2-0 in one-score games and 2-0 in two score games.

On the close ones...
2003: TBH, I don't remember this game. No idea if it was actually close, or just looks close.
2009: KF later admitted that he regrets playing for OT instead of for the win w/backup QB James Vandenburg.
2010: Had OSU at 4th and 10(?) with 4:00 left, Terrelle Pryor scrambles for 1st down, they score on that drive. That one hurt.

Ferentz always plays for the tie.
Rarely regrets it

Agree on 2010.  2010 hurt.  That was probably the last time I ever thought Iowa had a chance to compete for a national championship.  Never again will I be that naive.

Even in 2015 when Iowa started 12-0,  or in 2021 when Iowa was ranked #2 in country (its true! ) I did not have any delusions that Iowa was an elite team.  I know better now.

The 2010 game with Wisconsin was an all-timer, 31-30 Wisconsin (for Wisconsin fans, since the Badgers pulled it out).

The winning drive went 80 yards over 15 plays, burned 7:29 off the clock, and included a fake punt for a first down and another 4th and 5 conversion.

That win also evened the series all time (again; it's been a back-and-forth affair).
