#4 Michigan (2-0) vs. UConn (1-2) Game Week

Donovan Edwards may be out, not sure what it is- speculation is ranging from concussion to ankle tweak. Not that they really need him for this week anyway. Will be nice to see RB3 CJ Stokes get some more work in.

Fully expect JJ McCarthy to rip a pretty lousy UConn defense to shreds. Only question is how soon will Harbaugh call off the dogs. He did so vs Hawaii pretty early- you keep JJ in that game into the 3rd and Michigan probably drops at least 70 on them.

We know how talented and gifted JJ is, anybody with eye balls can see it- but he won't really be tested until week 5 when Michigan goes on the road to Kinnick. Maryland looks like they can play some offense, but not sure about that defense- plus that one is at home. And yes, Iowa's offense is downright awful, but Iowa does play some damn good defense now- and winning on the road in the B1G is always tough- and Kinnick is a tough ass place to play.

Connecticut Huskies (1-2) at #4 Michigan Wolverines (2-0)
NOON - Ann Arbor, MI - ABC
I think everyone, include Cade McNamera, based on his Colorado State postgame comments, knew he had to substantially outplay J.J. McCarthy, to retain the starting job after this two game split.  Well, he didn't do that, and instead, McCarthy looked like the clearly better option.  From a roster management standpoint, how the two fared against Hawaii made things easier, and he had to know from a locker room management standpoint, there was really no easy choice.  UConn is certainly not a good team, but I don't think they are the completely inept unit we saw the past couple of seasons.  They handled FCS Central Connecticut State, were winning at Utah State for a while, before playing a decent Syracuse team.  That might not sound like much, but considering just how horrible the Huskies were a year ago, it's not nothing.  UConn has the ability to run the ball, and stop the run...at least against teams that aren't competing for a CFP birth.  They are averaging over 200 ypg on the ground, and over the past two weeks, are only giving up about 105 rushing ypg.  I think Michigan might be a tad bit better in the trenches than Central Connecticut State or Syracuse.  And the passing game, both offense and defense, is a disaster.  They did complete 84% of their passes last week, 16-19, but for just 105 yards, a nearly impossible 6.56 ypc.  And the defense let Garrett Shrader complete 20 of 23 for 292 yards, and 12.7 ypa.  They were giving up roughly twice as many yards per attempt as they gained themselves.  The Huskies might become a serviceable team under Jim Mora Jr., they are clearly playing hard for him, but for a team that wants to control clock, and run the ball, playing any Power 5 team right now, let alone a top end one, is a terrible matchup.

Another tomato can game to give Michigan fans a warm fuzzy.  McCarthy is starting but I'm hoping to see some improvement out of McNamara.  Not much to learn in this game but next week against Maryland we'll find out if Michigan's defense is as good a hyped.  The week after that Iowa will test Michigan's offense.

yeah pretty much where I am at. We'll learn some things about Michigan's D vs Maryland next week and then about Michigan's O with McCarthy the week after @Iowa. Iowa might be absolutely putrid on offense, but road games in Kinnick are always a really tough out and Iowa plays sound fundamental defense at a high level.

speaking of the Iowa game...CFB insider Bruce Feldman of FoxSports might've let it slip in a podcast that the Michigan @ Iowa game will be a noon kickoff. That's a big break for Michigan if that is true. Playing in Kinnick at night freaking succccckssss for the visiting team.

Michigan has played 2 JV teams thus far, so caveats apply- but dude was a 5* top 10-15ish 'croot and have heard nothing but great things about true frosh CB Will Johnson in spring and fall.

Will is rated by PFF as the #2 highest graded CB in man coverage in CFB through first 3 weeks of the season. He'll be starting opposite DJ Turner by mid-season this year- and that'll be the best 1-2 punch at CB that Michigan has had in some time now. Probably not since they had Long & Hill- and both these guys have higher ceilings than those guys imo due to much better size/physical gifts.

Michigan wanted a BCS program to open the renovated Michigan Stadium, on fairly short notice, and they got UConn to agree to it, if they made it a home and home.  So UM hosted them, and beat them pretty easily, and then, on the return game, UConn almost got them in Storrs

Did anyone catch the stat the broadcast team gave at the end of the game? I thought I heard them wrong until I went to the box score. They had 7 qbs complete a pass today. I tried googling the record but couldn’t find it.
