I think the rain in State College turns it into a defensive struggle.  Team with the best OL and running game wins.

You were right. It was a defensive struggle for Iowa, and an offensive nightmare.

Brian needs some points
Barta was a weak athletic director to allow Brian to return for another season. I recall some of the really horrible offenses in the 1970s Iowa had, when it didn't have much of a defense either. The QBs were actually worse then than now. In 1978, at QB:

The fact the offense was worse then than now, doesn't make now feel better.

The learning curve is getting steeper. Brian now has to average 26.67 points per game over the remaining 9-games to retain his job.
Let's examine last year's last 9 games to see where Brian might stand.
In 2022, Iowa scored 172 points in its last 9 games, or 19.11 points per game.
Iowa did play Ohio State and Michigan in the last 9 games last year, who Iowa doesn't play this year, so let's eliminate those two teams and see where Brian stands. Without Ohio State and Michigan in the final 7 games of the 2022 season, Iowa averaged 21.14 points per game. The schedule this year is very similar to last year except Ohio State and Michigan are gone and Michigan State is on. Brian will be close to being canonized as a saint by the Pope, if he can pull it off, as he will pull off a miracle . . . oops, I think miracles have to be pulled off post-death, but anyway, he could be on his way if there is a miraculous recovery.
Cade must be thinking, "How did I sign up with a team with no QB coach, and with an offensive coordinator who is so clueless?" Iowa has many talented players on offense, which is why this is giving Hawkeye fans fits. They just don't have a skilled coordinator.

Penn State putting 31 unanswered points on Iowa tells me Iowa has problems on defense too.  And that Penn State is really good.  And…it was a white out.

It just feels like PSU is going to dominate this game, something like 31-10 final score.  It may only be 10-3 at the half but the Iowa defense will eventually get tired.

Boy,  turns out my prediction of 31-10 PSU was way too optimistic about Iowa's ability to score 10 points.  Iowa's effort was even worse than what I imagined.  PSU is clearly playing at another level right now.

I think that PSU is really good - both sides of the ball

but, 76 total yards by Brian is really bad

with no noticeable effort to make adjustments during the game or at the half to spark the offense

I guess the same could be said about the Iowa defense.
PSU ran the same plays drive after drive in the second half.

just a tough night in a tough environment vs a tough opponent

Iowa's defense will put in a better effort against MSU next week but Iowa"s offense, especially the passing game, seems unfixable, unless Brian Ferentz is fired.

For 4 straight games this season, Iowa"s passing game has done absolutely nothing after the first 2 drives of the game.  It's like Brian has a couple of successful pass plays he can run and then he's done.

The decision to double-down on Brian Ferentz in 2022 and make him both the QB coach and the OC definitely back-fired.  The decision to triple-down on Brian and not fire him after 2022 has to be single worse mistake of head coach Kirk Ferentz long career.

Although Kirk Ferentz was downplaying it at the time,  people may forget at the time Iowa was ranked #2 in the country after Iowa beat PSU,  and Kirk might have got caught up in the hype.

It's hard to be believe now but Spencer Petras had just won 12 games in a row as Iowa's starting QB.  Iowa rose quickly to #2 in 2021 by beating #19 Indiana, #9 Iowa State and #3 PSU,  plus a blowout win at MD where Iowa scored 52 points.
is this about the time Brian got heavily involved?
2022??

As I have thought for some time now, Brian Ferentz' continued employment as OC is inexcusable.

Penn State is a very good team and has more talent. That is not Brian's fault. 76 yards, that is. If this were a one-off you'd just chalk it up to "sh!t happens" and move on but it isn't. Iowa's offense has been consistently terrible for pretty much all of Brian's tenure.
