17-6, Penn State
probably very accurate.

Iowa is just flat out not going to score points on offense vs that Penn State defense.

Only shot Iowa has is to get some special teams td's and defensive td's. Not one or the other. Both. They need multiple scores from D/STs to even have a prayer in this game.

Is it true that there is some bad blood between the fanbases going into this matchup?  Iowa fans booing the Penn State injuries in 2021 and Kirk Ferentz referring to them as rats?

It's interesting if you go on the Iowa message boards how many fans have not let go of the whole Jerry Sundusky pedofile controversy at all.  Some still refer to the school as Pedo State,  insisting PSU should have been kicked out of the Big Ten permanently.

While I guess you could still debate if PSU got a heavy enough penalty at the time,  and if PSU did enough to atone for it's sins,  I will concede at some point you just got to let it go and leave it in the past.

It probably does not help that Iowa plays MSU after PSU.  MSU has its own problems with sexual deviants.

Of course Iowa is not exactly innocent over the years either,  having both football players and basketball players accused of rape in the past.  Which is another reason I would rather just drop the subject.

Iowa fans booed injured Penn state players, Kirk Ferentz defended them and said they “smelled a rat”… insinuating that penn state was faking injuries.  A couple of injured guys did come back later in the game, but they rained down boos on players who lost multiple games, their season or their career.

In addition, Some say that some of those injuries were caused by cheap shots, but I’m not willing to go there.

Although Kirk Ferentz was downplaying it at the time,  people may forget at the time Iowa was ranked #2 in the country after Iowa beat PSU,  and Kirk might have got caught up in the hype.

It's hard to be believe now but Spencer Petras had just won 12 games in a row as Iowa's starting QB.  Iowa rose quickly to #2 in 2021 by beating #19 Indiana, #9 Iowa State and #3 PSU,  plus a blowout win at MD where Iowa scored 52 points.

Anyway people noticed a normally humble Kirk Ferentz was saying some uncharacteristic cocky or a-hole level things at press conferences.  The PSU injury thing was probably one of them.  Or least so I thought.  Then somebody made a video of some of the PSU injured players and a couple of injuries did look like blatant flopping and you can kind of see Iowa fans point. I wish I could find that video again.  But anyway, even with the video, it is safe to say Iowa fans and Ferentz still over-reacted.

Then a week later the bubble burst big time and Iowa started it's new pattern of only scoring only one offensive TD a game that continued the rest of 2021 and throughout 2022.  All those early victories in 2021 over ranked teams was a mirage as none of them finished ranked in the final 2021 rankings.  After a quick 6-0 start and #2 ranking,  Iowa finished 4-4 and 10-4 overall.  And Kirk Firentz, with a few exceptions, stopped saying cocky things in press conferences.

Can't sleep.  Found this posted in an old thread on an Iowa message board - "Franklin calls out Hawk fans". Somebody actually charted all the PSU injuries in the 2021 game.
Game Time
PSU Player #
PSU Player Name
Down
Injury
Did player return to action?
13:12 Q1
97 – Defense
Mustipher
Iowa 1st & 10, run play for -1 yards
Left leg/knee from block by Linderbaum
Did not return
4:02 Q1
13 – Offense
Lambert-Smith
PSU 2nd & 8 Iowa 37. 33 yard pass/catch
Left leg from low tackle
Returned 1st play of the next series, played rest of way
3:14 Q1
1 – Defense
Brister
Iowa 1st & 10 Iowa 25, run play for 19 yards
Shoulder or head – high hit on tackle of Goodson
Back in after missing 1 play, played rest of way
12;35 Q2
14 – Offense
Clifford
PSU 3rd & 7 Iowa 14, incomplete pass
Ribs – hard hit by Campbell
Did not return
7:52 Q2
91 – Defense
Ellis
Iowa 1st & 10 PSU 16, run play for 4 yards
Left elbow/arm, in on tackle of Goodson – it's possible PSU #16 fell on his arm during tackle
Returned 1st series of Q3, played rest of way
5:39 Q2
0 – Defense
Sutherland
Iowa 1st & 10 Iowa 36, WR screen for 11 yards
Shoulder or upper body – hard, high block from 73-Iowa
Did not return
5:29 Q3
17 – Defense
Ebiketie
Iowa 1st & 10 Iowa 36, run play for 18 yards
Opposite side of play, not involved in tackle, no one around him, not touched
Back in after missing 4 plays, played rest of way

My own comments.  This is the first time looking at this.  From the descriptions, most injuries sound legit.  Mustipher, Clifford and Sutherland did not return at all.  Well, all were legit injuries except for Ebiketie, which sounds like a flop to me.

But the injuries have an interesting pattern, which I could see why it made Iowa fans wrongly suspicious.  See if you can see the pattern.  All injuries on defense except for Clifford.  4  of them were right after big plays by Iowa's offense.  A 33 yard pass,  a 19 yard run,  a 11 yard WR screen,  and an 18 yard run.

Again I think Iowa fans were wrong but their wrong instincts weren't based on nothing.

I know it's laughable now to think that any team would have to fake injuries to slow down Iowa's offense,  but people have to remember, Iowa's offense did not go into the tank until after the PSU game.  Iowa had just scored 51 points on MD the week before. So in their minds,  Iowa fans thought they were right to be suspicious.

As I see it this game is a LOT more important for Penn State than it is for Iowa, in part because it is a home game for the Lions and in part because while both teams are among the favorites to win their divisions that would not change for Iowa with a loss, it would change for PSU with a loss.

Nobody really expects the B1G-W Champion to be undefeated and a two-loss B1G-W Champion isn't unlikely:

  • PU won the west with 3 losses in 2022
  • IA won it with 2 in 2021
  • NU only had 1 league loss loss in 2020 but that was a shortened season
  • UW won it with 2 losses in 2019 in a tie with MN
  • NU won it with 1 league loss n 2018 but they had three OOC losses (Duke, Akron, ND)
  • UW won it undefeated in 2017
  • UW won it with 2 losses in 2016
  • IA won it undefeated in 2015 - last year of 8 game league schedules
  • UW won it with 1 league loss in 2014 but they also had an OOC loss
So in the nine years that the B1G-W has existed their champion has had:
  • 0 league losses twice:  IA in 2015 and UW in 2017
  • 1 league loss thrice:  UW in 2014, NU in 2018, NU in 2020
  • 2 league losses thrice:  UW in 2016, UW in 2019, IA in 2021
  • 3 league losses once:  PU in 2022
So the B1G-W Champion has had at least two league losses almost half the time (4/9).

After this, Iowa only has two more road games (UW and UNL).  The B1G-W gets 5 home / 4 road this year and Iowa plays Northwestern at Wrigley so that is it.

As I see it, the favorites to win the B1G-W are the UW/PU winner, MN if they blow out NU, and Iowa irrespective of what happens in this game.

What about Penn State?

Mathematically things are the same as they are for Iowa.  Penn State would still control their own destiny to the B1GCG and probably the CFP even with a loss here.  Practically, however, the chances of those things look pretty remote.

This game might be Iowa's toughest of the year, it almost certainly isn't for Penn State.  Hosting Michigan and travelling to Ohio State are almost certainly bigger challenges and even hosting Maryland might be (definitely would if they had to do it in September, not sure about November).  If the Lions can't beat Iowa at home then you have to figure that their chances against the Buckeyes on 10/21 and Wolverines on Veteran's Day aren't very good.
