some roster spots have an impact outside of the play on the field.

Sounds like it’s this. They would’ve taken him as a walk on in the past but going forward you can’t just have unlimited walk ons. 105 hard cap on the roster and all of them can be on scholly, so why not ?

You sure?

I think it could be a walk on. Herbie family doesn't need the 'ship.
I’m sure Herbie has boat loads of tv money after working for Disney for 30 years, but free is free.

Michigan education for an out of state kid + room & board & food ain’t cheap. I’m sure Herbie won’t mind saving hundreds of thousand of dollars over the course of 4 years. Who wouldn’t?

Big ten has capped ships at 85
That could change

Yeah, it comes down to a lot of things with these kids...

Someone being actively recruited to Michigan for a scholarship spot is expecting a scholarship, and likely NIL money (even if it's some "baseline" value and not star-level money). A walk-on is more along the lines of "just happy to be here" sort of thing.

So if the B1G actually is limiting scholarships to 85, I could see Herbie's kid--who has no other high-level offers--joining the team anyway because it'll be a great education and it's not like his dad will notice the cost other than a rounding error.

But if Michigan actually WOULD be giving out "up to" 105 scholarships, telling a kid you want him on the team but you're not going to pay his way is just disrespectful. And if you really would be giving out up to 105 scholarships with a hard cap, you're better off spending that scholarship (+NIL) money on a kid who isn't brought in PURELY to be a deep depth QB that you seriously hope never sees the field, or plan to move to a different position.

IMO smart coaches are gonna have to manage every one of the 105 spots effectively

Zero.  And no other D-1 offers.

I think it’s great for the kid.  Just got a full ride offer at a premier school and football powerhouse!
Some people need to get more in their life.  🙄
Wait til people on the internet find out that Vince Dooley played QB at Auburn, and later Coached UGA for 25 F ing years, and Pat Dye played at UGA before Coach Auburn at the same time Dooley was at UGA.

The all time winningest coach in college softball history, Michigan's Carol Hutchins, played for MSU, and won a national title there in the pre-NCAA (AIAW) era.

Michigan getting visits in January from Bama commit 5* OT Ty Haywood (6'5, 285) the #18 player overall in the nation and #4 OT in the 247Composite and from former Ohio State commit 4* EDGE Zahir Mathis (6'6, 225) the #73 player overall in the nation and #6 EDGE.

Michigan is the team to beat for both of them right now, but others are trying to get involved. Have to close them in January. They add those two their recruiting class moves up to about 5th in the nation.

Bo Schembechler played for Woody Hayes at Miami of Ohio and was an assistant coach under Woody at Ohio State.

If college programs only hired guys that played at their schools no one would have a coach worth a shit.
