Volleyball Day in Nebraska event at Memorial Stadium on August 30, 2023, set a world record for attendance at a women's sporting event with 92,003 fans.

Thats' what I am saying. Probably not this year, but maybe next year the girls will be playing on Saturday afternoons. We'll see how the football team does this year.

I think I wish Iowa had Nebraska's QB, Anthony Colandrea. Iowa's OC, Tim Lester, could tame him and help him eliminate mistakes. I sort of hope that in Colandrea's final game of 2026 he finishes in usual Nebraska fashion, with a crucial turnover down the stretch.

If your boys would stop making crucial turnovers, it would have had a pretty good team the past two years. The untimely turnovers befuddle me, year after year, and coach after coach.

1901: Dispatches from South Bend, Neb., provide glimpses of the goings-on at preseason camp, where the diversions include fishing and rifle practice and there’s plenty of fresh milk from Farmer Straith’s cows.

1906: New coach Amos Foster says speed will be essential as college football operates under revolutionary new rules, including legal forward passes and an extra five yards to gain for a first down. | Full story

1911: The surprise return of quarterback Leon “Jerry” Warner and end Gus Lofgren buoys Nebraska’s hopes for the coming season.

1931: Four dozen Huskers report for the season’s first practice under third-year coach Dana X. Bible.

1936: The Huskers boast a strong backfield – Lloyd Cardwell, John Howell and Olympian Sam Francis – as they start preparations for the 1936 season.

1946: Freshman Tom Novak’s elevation to the first team is among the roster moves made by new coach Bernie Masterson after the first week of practice.

1951: Nebraska enters the season ranked No. 12 by AP, and the Huskers’ home game against Colorado in November is slated for a regional NBC telecast.

1961: Ten days before the start of the fall semester, Nebraska loses a down-to-the-wire recruiting battle as Omaha Central’s Gale Sayers reverses field and opts to enroll at Kansas.

1966: Quarterback Bob Churchich sparkles as the Huskers scrimmage one week before their season opener against TCU.

1971: Sports Illustrated runs a big feature on Bob Devaney but ranks his defending national champs No. 2 behind Notre Dame.

1976: The Huskers practice under the lights at Seacrest Field in preparation for their nighttime opener at LSU.

1986: Sparked by Steve Taylor on offense and a stifling Blackshirt defense, Nebraska scores 24 unanswered points in the second half for a 34-17 win over Florida State. It was the first night game in Memorial Stadium history, and it came after an eligibility issue involving dozens of Huskers was ironed out.

1991: Keithen McCant comes off the bench at quarterback and leads the Huskers to a 59-28 win over Utah State. Nebraska piled up 617 rushing yards and an NCAA-record 44 first downs.

1996: Despite being held to 184 yards rushing, Nebraska throttles Michigan State, 55-14, taking advantage of two defensive touchdowns and one on special teams. Meanwhile, the Huskers’ image problems aren’t over

2001: The Blackshirts hold Notre Dame to 162 total yards in a 27-10 win in Lincoln. Nebraska was playing its third game of the season but Notre Dame just its first.

2016: The Huskers pick off five passes from future NFL star Josh Allen in a 52-17 win over Wyoming in a game that Nebraska led by just seven points entering the fourth quarter

The week of Sept. 11-17, looking back in five-year intervals

1901: Rainy weather forces an early end to the Huskers’ preseason camp near South Bend, Neb. 

1906: Heat makes the going difficult in the team’s initial practices. 

1921: Fred Dawson’s Huskers head to East Campus for their first practice. Also, former NU lineman Farley Young is named coach of the freshman team.

1926: Sixty-four players report as coach Ernest Bearg begins practices.

1931: A Nebraska lineman reports an enticement from a player at Montana, where former Husker assistant “Bunny” Oakes is head coach.

1951: Star running back Bobby Reynolds suffers a shoulder injury during a scrimmage at Camp Curtis and is expected to be out of action for up to six weeks.

1956: Coach Pete Elliott announces that veteran quarterback Don Erway is likely to sit out the season opener because of knee problems. (Erway would miss the entire season and give up football.)

1966: Nebraska overcomes a sputtering offensive effort in a 14-10 win over TCU to open the season.

1971: The Blackshirts keep Dan Fouts and Bobby Moore in check as Nebraska opens the season with a 34-7 victory over Oregon.

1976: Top-ranked Nebraska opens the season by stubbing its toe in a 6-6 tie at LSU. Miscues in the kicking game proved costly.

1981: A year after suffering a 57-0 loss to Nebraska, Iowa uses a stingy defense, turnovers and Reggie Roby’s booming punts to send the Huskers to a shocking 10-7 defeat.

1986: Players and coaches are relieved that the Huskers’ ticket ordeal with the NCAA is over.

1991: The Huskers manhandle Colorado State, 71-14, registering their second consecutive game without having to punt.

2001: The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 force postponement of hundreds of sports events, including the Nebraska-Rice game. At the time of the attacks, nobody was in the World Trade Center offices of the Boomer Esiason Foundation, whose staff included former Husker Dave Rimington.

2011: A 24-0 run in the second half breaks open a close game as the Huskers defeat Washington, 51-38, in the teams’ third meeting in 365 days. Nebraska gashed the Huskies for 309 rushing yards.

2016: A gritty perfomance by Tommy Armstrong Jr. leads Nebraska to a come-from-behind upset of Oregon, 35-32.
