The times in college athletics, they are a-changing, and so is Nebraska Athletics’ nomenclature for players’ eligibility status.

On the Huskers’ official rosters, the term “redshirt” is being phased out, thanks to the NCAA’s new age-based five-in-five model.

Any Husker who has redshirted at some point is being given a new designation.

Sometime in the last several days, redshirt freshmen on the football roster became known as sophomores. Redshirt sophomores became juniors. And so on.

But nobody’s losing eligibility. It’s just a new way of classifying things.

What about players who are truly in their final season of eligibility? They now carry the label “Fifth Year” (or “Sixth Year” in less common cases like that of Owen Stoudmire). A dozen players on the Huskers’ football roster have these post-senior designations as they head into the 2026 season.

The Nebraska softball team will host the 2027 Big Ten Tournament at Rhonda Revelle Field at Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln, Neb, the conference announced on Thursday. The Huskers also hosted the conference tournament in 2013 and are the first team to host the tournament twice since its return in 2013.

“We are honored that Nebraska and Bowlin Stadium have been selected as the host site for the 2027 Big Ten Tournament,” head coach Rhonda Revelle said. “Our staff will take pride in putting on a first-class event. The environment at Bowlin Stadium will be electric.”

Bowlin Stadium, which opened in 2002 and has been updated multiple times since, offers various amenities, including seating for over 3,000 fans, dugouts with restrooms, a video board, two bullpens, concessions, a ticket booth and a press box. The stadium has 1,158 chairback seats and bleachers along the first and third base lines, along with berm seating in the outfield. Bowlin Stadium’s clubhouse features a team locker room and lounge, coaches offices, medical facilities and more.

Each of the top 10 attendance marks in Nebraska softball history have been set in the last two years at Bowlin Stadium. In 2026, Nebraska had nine games with an attendance over 3,000 fans. The Huskers ranked third nationally with an average attendance of 2,780 fans per game in 2026.

The Big Red claimed the Big Ten Tournament title in 2022 and 2026 and reached the semifinals in 2023, 2024, 2025.

Revelle returns for her 35th year at the helm of the Nebraska softball program, which made its eighth Women’s College World Series appearance last season after sweeping the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles.

When it comes to explosive plays, I believe Dana Holgerson has mentioned that we need five explosive plays a game.

A week in Husker history

1901: Maybe this is why it’s called preseason “camp”: The team gets set for work at South Bend, Neb., where “the men will live in tents along the Platte river.”

1911: With practices set to start Sept. 26, new coach Jumbo Stiehm arrives in Lincoln and details his plans, which include polishing the Huskers’ passing game.


1916: Nebraska alum Cozette McManigell Brannon is believed to be the nation’s first female college football coach as she takes charge of the second team at Jonesboro Agricultural College (now Arkansas State), where her husband coaches the varsity.

1946: War-depleted rosters are a thing of the past as the Huskers report for preseason drills with new coach Bernie Masterson.

1951: Inexperience on the offensive line dims the Huskers’ hopes of duplicating the success of 1950. Meanwhile, players begin the preseason grind at Camp Curtis and receive inspirational words from former coach Fred Dawson.

1961: As coach Bill Jennings begins preseason drills, some of the 56 Huskers on hand could stand to shed a few pounds.

1966: The Huskers enter the 1966 season as the heaviest Nebraska team yet, at 215 pounds per man.

1976: Former Husker fullback Tony Davis creates a stir with his comments that Nebraska is too conservative on offense and defense to win a national championship.

1981: Inexperience at quarterback looms as a big question mark for the ’81 Huskers.

1986: The NCAA orders one- and two-game suspensions of five dozen Huskers for misuse of game tickets, and coach Tom Osborne says the team may have to forfeit its opener against Florida State.

2001: The Blackshirts shine in the second half and Dahrran Diedrick rushes for 177 yards in his first career start as Nebraska shuts down Troy State, 42-14.
