It was relatively common knowledge without much attempt to hide it that Kiffin would've jumped to Baton Rouge last year, had he been offered.  I wouldn't say he was silently campaigning for the job, but there was definitely some winking and a noticeable lack of denial.

I don't think he's against leaving for the right job.

As much as I don't like the guy, I've changed my mind on him over the years as a coach.  He's good at what he does.....now.  Still don't think he was so great when he first started landing major gigs.

Kiffin signs a new contract with Ole Miss. He's staying put.

Nebraska hires Matt Rhule.

yup. what this affects is Cinci players hitting the portal or any recruits that B1G schools may want to flip. Cinci has 4 commits rated 4*'s....you can bet the B1G schools going to try to poach.

also will be interesting to see what happens with Leonhard the interm HC. Wisconsin's star RB Braeleon Allen was rumored to be hitting the portal if Wisconsin let Leonhard go. Welp, that just might happen now.

Wisconsin247 reporting Fickell hire is all but a done deal. What happens with Leonhard?

that's up to Fickell

just like Mickey's fate at UNL is up to Rhule

does Fickell have an issue with Leonhard or his defensive philosophy?

Does Fickell have a guy he just likes and believes in more?

Obviously, keeping a true Badger like Leonhard on staff has many advantages, but......... it's gonna be Fickell's call

Wow, just yesterday they were reporting Wisc was close to hiring Leonhard as their permanent head coach.  What an emotional roller coaster for Jim Leonhard.

did the loss to the Gophers cause Wisconsin to move on from Jim and go with the outsider?

coaching hires are a lot luck, and no such thing as a sure thing. just bets and safer bets. Makes sense to go with a guy who has been a head coach for awhile. Fickell is just the safer bet.

I doubt the whole thing came together in less than 24 hours.  Probably was in the works for awhile.  It's just the loss to Minn might have given Wisc extra incentive to meet Fickel's demands.

If Fickell kept Leonard, he'd be keeping around his replacement.  Mejor no.
