1927 RUSHING CHAMP? Capping a remarkable senior season, Glenn Presnell rushed for 122 yards on 13 carries as Nebraska knocked New York University from the ranks of the unbeaten, 27-18, on Thanksgiving Day in Lincoln.
Presnell set up a touchdown with an 83-yard run as NU bolted to a 19-0 first-half lead. The New Yorkers roared back to make it 19-18 early in the fourth quarter, but Nebraska sealed the win with a safety and a TD.
Presnell by some accounts led the nation in rushing in 1927. Inconsistent record-keeping, however, makes his reported eight-game total of 1,446 yards less than certain.

THIS WEEK IN HUSKER HISTORY
The week of Nov. 18-24, looking back in five-year intervals

1892: After Nebraska and Iowa battle to a 10-10 tie in Omaha, the Iowa City paper claims that without George Flippin, Nebraska would have lost by 100-0.

1897: Ill will continues between Kansas and Nebraska as KU unsuccessfully pursues a rematch after the previous week's controversial game.

1912: Squaring off against Oklahoma for the first time ever, the Huskers manage a 13-9 win in Lincoln. The game capped a season of booming gate receipts.

1927: In its final Missouri Valley Conference game, NU clobbers Kansas State, 33-0.

1932: Wins of 5-0 at Oklahoma and 21-6 over Missouri give the Huskers a perfect record in Big Six play. Four of the 11 spots on the United Press all-conference team go to NU.

1937: The Huskers put it all together in a 28-0 win over Iowa. It's Nebraska's biggest point production of the season, and the Hawkeyes’ sophomore star, Nile Kinnick, is kept bottled up.

1947: Bud Wilkinson's first Oklahoma team hands the Huskers a 14-13 loss. One of Nebraska's touchdowns came when Cletus Fisher intercepted a Darrell Royal pass and returned it 65 yards to paydirt.

1957: In Oklahoma's first game after the end of its 47-game winning streak, the Sooners rout the Huskers in a game Nebraska led in the second quarter.

1987: In a much-hyped matchup, No. 1 Nebraska falls 17-7 to No. 2 Oklahoma in Lincoln.

1997: There's speculation about who would win a Nebraska-Michigan game as both teams continue their unbeaten seasons with no chance of meeting in a bowl game.

2012: The Huskers lock up a berth in the Big Ten title game with a 13-7 win at Iowa. For the fifth time in the 2012 season, Nebraska rallied from a second-half deficit to win.

A proven program builder in college football, Matt Rhule has been hired as Nebraska's Head Football Coach. Nebraska Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Trev Alberts will introduce Rhule as the 31st permanent head coach in Nebraska history on Monday in Lincoln.

The 47-year-old Rhule has built an impressive coaching resume over the past 25 seasons with experience at both the collegiate and professional levels. Rhule has served as a head coach for the past 10 years, including seven seasons in the collegiate ranks and the past three seasons in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers.

Alberts said Rhule's success as the head coach at Temple and Baylor provides evidence of Rhule's ability to build a program and made him an ideal fit at Nebraska.

"It is a privilege to welcome Coach Matt Rhule, his wife Julie, and their family to Nebraska," Alberts said. "Coach Rhule has created a winning culture throughout his coaching career, and he will provide great leadership for the young men in our football program. Matt is detail-oriented, his teams are disciplined and play a physical brand of football. Matt also has the personality and relationship-building skills to build a great staff and excel in recruiting."

Rhule said it is an honor to lead the Nebraska program and join the Lincoln community. He is excited to return to the college game and the opportunity to coach in the Big Ten Conference.

"It is a tremendous honor to be chosen to lead the Nebraska Football program," Rhule said. "When you think of great, tradition-rich programs in college football Nebraska is right at the top of the list.  The fan base is second to none, and I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to coach in Memorial Stadium on Tom Osborne Field. My family and I are so grateful to become a part of the Husker Family, and we can't wait to get started."

Rhule turned around programs at both Temple and Baylor during his seven seasons as a college head coach. In four seasons at Temple, Rhule guided the Owls to 28 victories, including 26 over his final three seasons from 2014 to 2016. After posting two wins in his first season, Temple posted a 6-6 record in 2014, setting the stage for the best back-to-back seasons in school history.

Temple posted a 10-4 record in 2015, were ranked as high as No. 22 in the Associated Press Poll and reached the American Athletic Conference's inaugural championship game. In 2016, Rhule led the Owls to a 10-3 record and an AAC championship. The conference title was the first in 49 seasons for the Temple program, and Temple reached bowl games in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history.

His success at Temple led Rhule to be named Baylor's head coach beginning with the 2017 season.  After one win in his first season, the Bears posted a 7-6 record a made a trip to the Texas Bowl in Rhule's second year.

In his final season in Waco in 2019, Rhule guided Baylor to an 11-3 record, an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game and a Sugar Bowl berth. Rhule was named the 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year and he became the first Power Five Coach to take a team from 11 losses to 11 wins within two seasons.

Rhule's collegiate success provided him the opportunity to take over as the Carolina Panthers head coach in 2020. Rhule guided the Panthers to five wins in each of his first two seasons and coached Carolina for five games in 2022.

Prior to his head coaching positions, Rhule had an impressive 15-year run as an assistant coach with stops at Albright College, Buffalo, UCLA, Western Carolina and Temple in college and the New York Giants in the NFL.

A native of New York City, Rhule played linebacker at Penn State from 1994 to 1997, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He also holds a master's degree from Buffalo. Rhule and his wife Julie have three children, Bryant, Vivienne and Leona.

Nebraska has signed Rhule to an eight-year contract. Additional contract details will be made available at Monday's press conference.

I'd like to see Coach Rhule to keep Mickey as WR coach and recruiter

that might be enough to get Casey Thompson and Trey Palmer to stay at UNL

THIS WEEK IN HUSKER HISTORY
The week of Nov. 25-Dec. 1, looking back in five-year intervals

1902: With a 12-0 win over Nothwestern, Nebraska completes the season unbeaten, untied and unscored upon. But the Western Conference is not impressed enough with NU's on-the-rise program to grant it admission, as the applications of the Cornhuskers and Notre Dame are rejected.

1937: Nebraska's first field goal attempt of the season brings a 3-0 win on a snow-covered field at Kansas State. The win typified a season of unusual victories. | OWH

1942: Kansas State upsets the Huskers 19-0 in Lincoln. The seventh loss of the season and the fifth shutout suffered were both new worsts for the program, and the attendance of 6,000 was a new Memorial Stadium low.

1967: Middle guard Wayne Meylan finishes ninth in the Heisman trophy vote.

1972: Middle guard Rich Glover is the top vote-getter on the UPI All-America team, and he's the subject of some Heisman talk. Johnny Rodgers, meanwhile, deals with character questions among Heisman voters and loses out to Iowa State's George Amundson for AP Big Eight offensive player of the year.

1982: NU holds off Oklahoma 28-24 to finish undefeated in conference play for a second consecutive season.

1987: A week after a deflating loss to Oklahoma, Keith Jones rushes for 248 yards as Nebraska dominates Colorado in Boulder, 24-7.

1992: Fortunate to be leading by a point at halftime, Nebraska dominates the final 30 minutes and beats Oklahoma 33-9 in Norman.

1997: Nebraska’s national championship hopes take a hit as a seemingly comfortable lead at Colorado nearly evaporates in the final few minutes, with the Huskers holding on for a 27-24 win.

2002: A 28-13 home loss to Coloardo leaves NU with its first losing record in conference play in 34 years.

2007: All signs point to Bo Pelini as the coaching search nears a conclusion.

Matt Rhule's eight-year contract with Nebraska will make $72 million over the next eight years in Nebraska, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That includes an offset of the "vast majority" of the $34 million still owed by the Carolina Panthers.

New Nebraska coach Matt Rhule is already getting to work amassing his first coaching staff. He is turning towards a familiar name as his first major hire, as the Huskers are bringing on Evan Cooper, per Pete Thamel. Cooper has served as Rhule’s defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator through multiple stops in his career. They most recently worked together with the Carolina Panthers in the NFL.

Rhule brought Cooper with him as cornerbacks coach in 2020 when he was initially hired. In the two seasons before that, he was the cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Baylor under Rhule. Rhule and Cooper started working together in 2013 when Rhule was named head coach at Temple. Cooper joined his staff as a defensive graduate assistant and in 2014 was named the director of external operations. From 2015-16, he was the director of player personnel for the Owls.

Rhule and Cooper moved to Baylor in 2017, where Cooper maintained his role as director of player personnel before he moved to an on-field role ahead of the 2018 season. Cooper even played under Rhule at Temple when Rhule was an assistant coach there.

New Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has reportedly wrangled two Carolina Panthers staffers to join him in Lincoln, according to a report from Joe Person. Assistant defensive line coach Terrance Knighton and assistant strength coach Corey Campbell are the two latest additions.

Person also shared that more stragglers from Rhule’s Panthers staff could eventually leave the NFL for the Big Ten program, but only confirmed the departure of Knighton and Campbell.

Terrance Knighton and Corey Campbell join former defensive backs coach Evan Cooper, who is reportedly joining Rhule at Nebraska as he has elsewhere in the past.

In his second year with Carolina, Knighton played seven seasons as a defensive tackle in the NFL from 2009-15. He was a third-round draft pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009 after playing for Temple from 2005-2008.

Campbell joined Rhule in Carolina from Baylor, where served four years as director of athletic performance. He played fullback at Georgia from 2010-13.

Casey Thompson is a very smart guy and I wouldn't expect him to say too much to the media after meeting with Rhule.

but what he did said seemed as if there's a decent chance he will be back next season.

now, it's early.  Casey hasn't met the O-coordinator or the QB coach

I'm somewhat hopeful

I feel the chances of finding a better QB than Thompson on the current roster or elsewhere is very low.

Shane Beamer talked about Marcus Satterfield during a recent radio appearance, confirming the departure of South Carolina’s OC. There has been no official announcement from Nebraska yet about Satterfield’s hiring.

Beamer went on “107.5 The Game” in Columbia and wanted to wish Satterfield the best at his new job. Beamer emphasized how much he appreciated Satterfield.

“We want to wish Marcus well getting connected with Coach Rhule out at Nebraska,” said Beamer. “Cool opportunity for him and appreciate his work in this program the last couple years as well.”
