I find it interesting how few of these bowls sell out, or even come close to it.  I think at times they sell some tickets, but the holders look like empty seats.

Without TV, we'd probably have 15 bowl games or so I suspect.

I wonder when the last bowl game happened with zero TV coverage.
Doesn't ESPN own a good deal of these?

That's why I wonder why they stage them all over the place.  Wouldn't it be cheaper for them just to play them in their Disney football stadium in Orlando or whatever?

My impression is that many of them are "owned" by the cities, like Shreveport, LA, which has of course had one for decades now.  I suppose if a smaller city can host a bowl game and get even 20,000 fans in from other areas it's a plus for them economically.  I'm guessing Las Vegas will end up shoveling money into their bowl and they might end up being an NC game contender soonish.

I can begin to see going to a game in Nashville or Orlando ot LV or even Tampa, perhaps with the family.  Going to NYC for a bowl game?  Nope.

Memphis?  Nope.  Charlotte?  Nope.

Although the Big Ten technically has agreements with 11 different bowls, they will only go to 9 of those bowls each year.

The agreement with the Orange Bowl is that any year that the Big Ten sends a non-playoff team to the Orange,  then the Big Ten won't send a team to the Outback Bowl.  The ACC will then take the Big Ten's spot in the Outback Bowl instead.

The agreements with the Belk and Las Vegas Bowls are split 50/50 deals.  Whenever the Big Ten sends a team to the Las Vegas Bowl, it won't send a team to the Belk, and Vice Versa.

Net result.  9 bowls a year for the Big Ten
There's still the issue of the Armed Forces Bowl and First Responders Bowl, each of which is supposed to get a B1G team in alternating years.  Or so sayeth Wikipedia, anyway.

Those will be gone from the Big Ten lineup after 2019.  2019 is the last year.

Ah, thanks!

Perhaps I should have looked at the title of the thread a little more closely.

Was searching about the last bowl w/o TV coverage and found this sparkling tidbit:

With six bowl games on the New Year’s Day calendar in 1937, an Associated Press headline proclaimed “‘Bowl’ Grid Games Are Here to Stay.” That was in spite of the vocal opposition of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which had just unanimously adopted a report that held post-season bowls had no place in college football “because they serve no sound educational ends, and such promotions merely trade upon intercollegiate football for commercial purposes.”

From Wikipedia, FWIW

ERT (ESPN Events) acquired its first bowl game in 2001, with its purchase of the Las Vegas Bowl from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The company moved into the area as it saw that some of their conference partners had teams that were bowl-eligible, but with no bowl available to take them. By 2013, ERT had founded two new bowl games and purchased four additional games. The games primarily serve as a source of live content for ESPN during the early weeks of bowl season, prior to the larger, traditional games in proximity to New Year's Day (such as the College Football Playoff "New Year's Six", which are also broadcast by ESPN). This strategy has been successful for ESPN, although it has in recent years contributed to an oversaturation of bowl games that have prevented them from all being populated by bowl-eligible teams. ESPN also runs a Division I FCS bowl game, the Celebration Bowl, which is played between the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) — the two prominent conferences of historically black colleges and universities.

ESPN Events operates the following bowls, which ESPN televises:

Armed Forces Bowl
Birmingham Bowl
Bahamas Bowl
Boca Raton Bowl
Camellia Bowl
Celebration Bowl
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
First Responder Bowl
Frisco Bowl
Gasparilla Bowl
Hawaii Bowl
Las Vegas Bowl
Myrtle Beach Bowl (2020)
New Mexico Bowl
Texas Bowl
ESPN Events also organizes several opening weekend games, such as the Camping World Kickoff, Advocare Texas Kickoff, and FCS Kickoff.

ESPN Events is also involved in college basketball, operating early-season events such as the AdvoCare Invitational, the Champions Classic, the Jimmy V Classic, the NIT Season Tip-Off, and the Phil Knight Invitational.

Sounds like some of the McMurphy stuff might be off. He just tweeted the following—

“MAC replaces ACC as Big Ten’s opponent in Quick Lane Bowl in new bowl cycle from 2020-25

So, ESPN does "own" (operate) a lot of bowls out there, interesting list, thanks.

The Las Vegas Bowl stadium upgrade can’t come soon enough. One more year in that racehorse dump.

These bowl games can be run as non-profits, and obviously they don't have to pay the players, so it isn't too hard for them to be "profitable" if they can get a sponsor and a tv contract.  ESPN doesn't have to pay money for TV rights if they already own the bowl, so essentially they just pay schools to come play the game.

The Peach Bowl was nonprofit for decades as I recall, and they struggled to make ends meet.  They finally hit upon getting an ACC and SEC team that would travel.  They actually got the ACC #2 team and SEC #5-6 team and they would lean to choosing a team that had a fan base if they could.

Combined with being on NYT and upgraded facilities, it turned into a success.

99 percent of the players love bowl games. So, they don't mind having as many as possible.
