For the first time since 2016, Nebraska is in the AP Top 25.

The preseason Associated Press poll was released Monday morning and the Huskers checked in at No. 24.

The Huskers joined six other Big Ten teams in the preseason poll, which was topped by Ohio State at No. 5. Michigan came in at No. 7, Penn State at No. 15, Michigan State at No. 18, Wisconsin at No. 19 and Iowa at No. 20.

The last time Nebraska appeared in a preseason poll — Associated Press or Coaches— was in 2014 when it opened at No. 22 in both. Nebraska just missed out on the preseason Coaches Poll, released on Aug. 1, but received the most votes of any team outside the top 25. Head coach Scott Frost, who has a vote in the poll, did not include the Huskers in his ballot.

Nebraska’s entry into the AP top 25 marks the first time overall since Week 15 of the 2016 season, a run of 33 consecutive polls without the Huskers.

Head Coach Scott Frost spoke with the media after practice and touched on the development of the team and where it is headed.

Frost started off by speaking about some of the scholarships he's awarded to walk-ons.

"We gave one away today." Frost said. "I think on our team the way the roster sits with our 85 (scholarships) we probably have three to give. We're still trying to decide on a couple of them, but we put Trent Hixson on scholarship today. The team was fired up for him, so he'll be on scholarship."

Frost said the ability to award scholarships to walk-on players is a great way to recognize the contributions walk-ons make to the program.

>>Nebraska unveiled a Blackshirts-inspired uniform earlier this week, but unlike previous alternates this one isn't going to be a one-game special.

"Honestly, I've been thinking about this a long time, way before I was the coach at Nebraska," Frost said. "I've seen a lot of alternate uniforms at Nebraska, but I haven't seen one specifically for the Blackshirts.

"I think I can spill the beans, I think by next year hopefully we have a home and away version of this. Down the road I'd like to see it be a tradition that if the defense has a great game and holds an opponent under so many points then they earn the right to wear Blackshirts the next week. I think that would be another source of pride for our defense. We probably won't start that this year. I just want to get the uniforms broken in and make sure the kids like them, but I'd like to see that happen next year."

So the team uniform would be red and white, but the defensive players would wear black and white?

that would be cool, but I think the entire team wears black if the defense posts a shutout the previous game

Nebraska senior defensive back is the latest Husker walk-on to earn a scholarship, Nebraska head coach Scott Frost announced Monday.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Stovall played his high school football at Omaha Creighton Prep and has become a standout on special teams. Stovall was Nebraska’s special teams player of the year in 2018, and has four tackles in 2019.

Stovall has appeared in 23 games during his Husker career, making five starts. He has made 16 total tackles during his career and recovered a fumble during his Husker career.

Nebraska will announce plans for a football facility on the day before the Ohio State game, The World-Herald has learned. NU athletics also sent a note to media outlets Thursday about a “major announcement” to be made in the East Stadium Plaza at 1:30 p.m Friday.

A press conference announcing the project had been widely expected this week, as NU Athletic Director Bill Moos on Wednesday night during a radio show hinted at an imminent announcement. According to one source, an investor’s meeting is planned for Friday, as well. The presser will include “key figures” from Nebraska’s athletic department and university administration.

The new facility is expected to have a price tag well over $100 million and will be built where the Ed Weir track stadium currently sits. The facility is expected to have bigger everything — weight room, locker room, meeting rooms — than the current North Stadium complex that opened in 2006. The new facility could have multiple stories, as well.

Nebraska football officially unveiled a proposed new football facility that athletic director Bill Moos said will be “a state-of-the-art, best facility of its kind in the country.”

The North Stadium expansion will a 350,000 square foot facility that will house the home of Nebraska football, as well as the training table and academic support for the entire Nebraska athletic department. The building will come with a $155 million price tag, and Nebraska hopes to break ground in spring 2020 with construction done in summer 2022.

The $155 million project will link the new facility with Memorial Stadium and will also improve the fan experience at Memorial Stadium. Construction will include new vertical transportation for fans entering and exiting the North Stadium.

The facility will provide the Nebraska football program with a new locker room, strength and conditioning center, athletic medicine facility, equipment room, meeting rooms, coaches’ offices and an additional outdoor practice facility. Plans for the building also include the training table and academic support facilities for student-athletes across all 24 Nebraska sports.

The current football facilities were built to accommodate a roster of approximately 125 players. Head Coach Scott Frost has placed a renewed emphasis on the importance and mission of the storied Nebraska walk-on program. Nebraska’s 2019 roster has more than 150 student-athletes creating a need for an expanded locker room, weight room, athletic medicine and meeting spaces.

Nebraska owns the largest roster in the Power Five ranks this season and trails only the service academies among FBS schools.

“This new complex will give our football program everything we need to operate efficiently on a daily basis,” Frost said in a statement. “This building will showcase Nebraska and be a difference-maker as we sell our program to recruits from all parts of the country. It was also important that we design a building that benefits all of our student-athletes and helps position all of our teams to compete at the highest level.”

The Nebraska Athletic Department has a goal of raising approximately $100 million to fund the ‘Go Big’ project. Moos said fundraising is about 35 to 40 percent to goal.

Is that a long-winded way of saying "elevators"?
