#19 Wisconsin (1-0) at South Florida (0-1) Post Game
« on: August 26, 2019, 10:39:59 AM »
So, here we go. The Badgers of Wisconsin travel south to Tampa to face the Bulls of South Florida.

It's been a coolish August in Wisconsin, which does not bode well for prepping against the Tampa heat and humidity. The training staff had better be diligent with hydration and nutrition this week. One thing UW has going for it is depth at every position, except TE. That will certainly help them battle the heat.

As for the game, I've got no idea how this thing goes. USF started strong last season and fell apart. UW never seemed to get things going, until the bowl game against Miami.

This is a much different team though. Players mention great chemistry and all that, which was lacking last season according to many.

UW has its best group of receiving threats (including Ferguson and Groshek) since at least 2011. That and they have a really good running back.

I'd lean toward picking UW here. Probably something like 31-12, or so.

I either forgot, or never knew (probably the first) that it was a road game.  Certainly makes things more interesting, not that USF is going to pack the stadium.

Wisconsin could have swapped this roadtrip with the Husker game on November 16th

get the Huskers early before the young talent gains game experience and get a warm Nov roadtrip for the fans to escape the snow

Maybe Hornibrook will drive over to see the game after not winning the job in Tallahassee.

Based on 247's method, Big Ten teams ranked oldest to youngest...

  • Michigan
  • Penn State
  • Ohio State
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Michigan State
  • Rutgers
  • Northwestern
  • Wisconsin
  • Nebraska
  • Minnesota
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Purdue

Having the three schools with the most STARZ also be the three oldest is not a recipe for surprise.  Also, maybe this is a year for Lovie to make a move.  The older half of the conference is 6 East Division schools, plus Illinois; and the youger half is 6 West Division schools, plus Indiana.

only the first two-deep of the season, things could change for the Huskers, but.............

There are only four total seniors listed on the offensive depth chart, and only one is listed as a starter.

Expectations and hopes are high. As they always are this time of year.

This optimist only sees one game on the schedule that I'm thinking, oof, can't find a way to handicap that one for us (at Ohio State), but starting the Big Ten season off with Michigan at the Camp is no joke. Plenty of tough games, but a couple of well-placed bye weeks (+Kent State) make for a potentially very high ceiling.

And--if they are as mediocre as they were last season--this week's tilt isn't assured, nor is a great season. The West's middle is much stronger--or feels like it should be--and there are plenty of questions about the Badgers' defense and passing game.

That's a long winded way of saying I'm full of hope, but my optimism is cautious.

two thoughts pop into my mind.

1) Why is Wisconsin traveling to play USF? USF should be traveling to Wisconsin.

2) Why is USF called University of South Florida? Shouldn't it be called University of West Florida? Or maybe Univeristy of Tampa? It's not in South Florida.

It was the southernmost university in the Florida state system at the time it was founded.  FAU and FIU were founded within a decade, and FGCU in the 90s.

West Florida is way out in the panhandle.

I don't even consider the panhandle to be part of Florida. It's Alabama to me. We need to draw a north/south line straight through Tallahassee and everything West of that line- give it to Alabama. Then move the state capitol to Orlando and let's be done with it.

On a serious note, I had no idea. Made sense for that name then. Now? It makes little sense. Might as well just rename it to University of Tampa.
