While I agree this is the game to watch, I'm not sure a lackluster performance by the Cats will have any bearing on their chances to repeat as West Champs
you do remember Duke and Akron last season
Yes, and barely beating Purdue. Northwestern did NOT start the season well.

I understand that seems to be par for the course for the purple kitties in recent years, but one would think it's a reputation they're interested in shedding.

And I certainly hope they shed it with a masterful game vs the Cardinal

Oddly, the one time they didn't stumble out of the gate they opened by beating Stanford I believe.

only the use of the term West, to describe Michigan in 2019.  If USF is objectionable, let's be honest about others.
The fight song harkens to the first ever Rose Bowl, which Michigan won 49-0. The lyrics were written then, and that context should make good sense of them..

During Lloyd's era, there were only two Big Ten teams with OOC win%'s inferior to their conference win%'s. Michigan and Northwestern were those two teams. On average they lost early and cleaned up late. I haven't rechecked that stat, but it does feel like Northwestern never shook that bug.

It's been more than 20 years since the last qualifying win.

Perhaps it's time to sing "Hail, hail to USC, the Champions of the West?" It's not like anyone's going to catch the Trojans for their Rose Bowl record anytime soon. Though, to be fair, Ohio State won the last one, and at least has a winning record out there. Would be a little strange to recognize the Buckeyes in the Michigan fight song, though.

It's a good ribbing, which has to be the point.. But like I said, this is born of an ancient win and ancient wins are at least equal to the modern ones. If they weren't, Michigan wouldn't have the rare and durable advantages it has.

The USSR anthem made little sense by the 80s, but they didn't change it.  So I get it.

I just like how even the Week 1 Game Week threads have gone off the rails.

Nah.

It was written in 1898, and yes, it made sense then because M was celebrating winning the Western Conference.

It still makes sense, along the lines of Northwestern being called Northwestern, even though today it's not the Northwest of anything. But, back when this area was referred to as the Northwest territory, it made perfect sense.

Oh dang! It's not about the Rose Bowl? That's worldview altering. I feel like I've been doing the equivalent fo calling Michigan Big Blue

I agree w all of the above, and understand the lyrical origins, just having a cheap laugh.   Lakers , Dodgers, Jazz, Badgers,  etc.  There's a good story to tell behind it so I like the nicknames that don't translate at first blush, so why not some allowance for historical context as it relates to school names and fight songs.

USF today,  USF tomorrow, USF forever!
