Nah.

It was written in 1898, and yes, it made sense then because M was celebrating winning the Western Conference.

It still makes sense, along the lines of Northwestern being called Northwestern, even though today it's not the Northwest of anything. But, back when this area was referred to as the Northwest territory, it made perfect sense.
I guess no need to put Ohio State in the song, then.

I, too, like these little historical curiosities. I even kind of like "the Speech"--you can't have heroes without villains. (Don't worry Anon, OSU is also definitely a villain in this scenario.)

And now with a good friend's daughter on scholarship at Michigan...sigh. Fortunately not in a sport that the Badgers compete.

Well, I think we forgot about the game a while back.

We haven't made it to the finer points of chile recipes just yet, but anyone make homemade bar cheese?

Ohio has this thing where they dot an "i" after they play some dumb longass song. Anyone ever see that, and anyone know when it came about?

Michigan's band was the first to spell a script Ohio. This was U-M in 1932:

OSU borrowed it and added a dot. If the trademark goes through, they might add an article.

Adding a dot is just like adding a stripe or two

Saw it live in 2009. As a former (high school) band geek I appreciated it, but as a guy standing in a full-to-capacity stadium, it all went by pretty quickly, and I was much more interested in what the football players did.

OSU's marching band is certainly the most creative/best(?) marchers I've ever seen, but the script is probably the least impressive thing they do.

I'm not sure we know who was first since everyone who bought Spalding helmets back then got front panels with a winged organization. That was originally a matter of Spalding's basic manufacturing process. So who was actually first? I don't think that's easy enough to know. Maybe 50 teams tied for first (interestingly, Michigan wasn't one of them!). I've heard it argued that MSU was actually the first of the current Big Ten teams to wear them:

Could be true but all we know for sure is that it wasn't Michigan. Michigan just popularized the design and turned something that was originally widely used without Michigan into a symbol widely understood as only Michigan's. That part is reminiscent of the Michigan Ohio script.

It's nice up here. When I crossed the border yesterday, on the way up, I felt the noose come off my neck. The air is free from pension debt here.
