Politics On The Hill: Josh Heupel Must Re-evaluate Staff
« on: November 22, 2022, 12:14:17 PM »

Let the coaching politics begin we will see if Heupel can make the big decisions when necessary. Loyalty only goes so far.

After the embarrassing loss getting knocked out of the CFP by losing to SC a mediocre team at best Heuple will have no choice but to re-evaluate his coaching staff because of the passing defense being the worst in the country.

Don't blame the players a coach can only teach what he knows and looks like the secondary needs more than they're getting.

snip:

Coach Josh Heupel must do some soul searching and staff evaluating after this debacle, because although Hooker wasn’t at a Heisman level, he shouldn’t shoulder the burden for this loss.

The Vols surrendered 606 yards in a 63-38 loss at South Carolina, with everything on the line.

South Carolina (7-4, 4-4 SEC) scored more points than it amassed in its three previous games combined.

Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler threw eight touchdown passes in the season’s first 10 games. He passed for six scores against the Vols (9-2, 5-2) and their porous secondary.

The back end of UT’s defense has been a hindrance since the loss in the Music City Bowl, to cap last season. The Vols’ pass defense ranks last in the SEC for the second consecutive year.

I tend to agree. I realize too there is not a lot for him to work with as well.

However that does no change the fact that the Knoxnews is not about integrity in Journalism, especially concerning UT. They love to stir the spot, led by that famous LSU lover John Adams

Our DB's have been a liability all season.
And our pass rush against SC was anemic, giving Rattler plenty of time...which meant easy pickings for him.
How much did the loss of Jeremy Banks have on our defense?  (e.g. pass rush, etc.)
Bottom line:  we need a talent upgrade.

We got several coming in the next class.

Rattle took deeper drops for the most part than other QBs a lot of the game which gave him more time.

I will say there was a lot of sand kicked up on that field, too, especially when cutting.

Not see in SC got fined for rushing the field yet. But I saw Vandy did get fined late last night for rushing after they beat Fla.

I’ll put the blame on the players for Saturday nights total shit effort and total lack of interest in playing that game. D coaching certainly needs to be addressed but that lack of effort Saturday was disgraceful

My thoughts, expressed on another site (I'll add here -- I liked the orange helmets.  But they may never be seen again, after Saturday).

Quote
(Sigh).

The epitome of "don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened."

Sakarlina put an enduring stink on the most entertaining season in a quarter of a century.

Nothing good comes of playing the Cocks. You win -- so what. It's Sakarlina.

You lose? It's dismal. You come in #5, jockeying for the playoff, with a Heisman hopeful QB -- and lose by 25, losing your QB late --

Devastating. One of the worse losses I can remember. And I can remember a LOT of 'em. Right up there with LSU in '01. Maybe worse -- LSU was a division champ.

Credit to the Cocks. I've never seen a team not wearing Crimson play such a complete game. They made every throw, caught every pass, covered every receiver, made every tackle, picked up every blitz. Just a great, go-for-broke game plan, that worked to perfection.

We can still have a fine season. Hopefully, that won't go sour the way '16 did, after a promising start. 10-2, regular season? FAR beyond my expectations. And I don't really care what bowl we go to. Didn't really care if we made the playoff -- which I hate -- other than that we were so close, I wanted to be able to say we did.

Just want to beat Vandy -- far from a sure thing; we're 20-point favorites the way Brandon is a great president --

and if we get to 11-2, I'll be whistling "Down the Field" all night long (yeah. I'm old. "Rocky Top" is alright. DTF is better. Do they even play it anymore?). And in time, I'll think more about the glorious wins over Florida and LSU and Bama, and the UK beat down, than about this past Saturday. Being ranked #1! Wow -- it's like a dream...

but I'll tell ya:

Winning is great. But losing sux a LOT more than winning is good. You win, you get that bounce in your step, the sun's a little brighter, the sky a little bluer, your girlfriend a little (maybe a lot) purdier.

You lose -- it just eats at ya. Fans worse than players, I think. We've lost so much in recent years, in games that had relatively little meaning, that I'd forgotten how BAD it can suck. Georgia was bad -- but, you know, they ARE #1. But this one... I'm probably kidding myself. This may stick with me more than the wins and the #1 ranking.

According to a friend of mine, who was a player at Tennessee, the whole thing is a result of NIL money and what Hooker is getting and what Jeremy Banks is not. It erupted when Banks walked on the power T in the locker room and Hooker demanded that Banks do the required push ups as punishment.

Banks(same guy that was kicked off the team in 2019 for telling cops they were lucky they didn't come from where he did, Cordova, because they shot cops there) took umbrage and went to blows.

This is when Heupel decided Banks would not make, the trip and the defense decided they would not give total effort.

It sounds to me like players, not coaches, need to go.

True, DBs have been a liability all season, but not nearly as bad as Saturday.

This one is hard to figure. It's 'almost' like there was collusion to play so badly with so much on the line.

The secondary hasn't improved much over last season. It's not the players it's the inability to coach them up. If it can be done on offense it can be done on defense.

I read elsewhere where some of the players packed it in and were just going through the motions because Banks wasn't allowed to make the trip and play.

It looked like it too and if that is the case then those who did should be shown the door to never return. If they aren't a team player and a VOL at heart, they don't need to be wearing the Orange.  It's not hard to watch the film to see who is playing to their capability and who isn't.
