week 6 power rankings
« on: October 09, 2019, 11:04:46 AM »
1 - bama - still best team, imo, but it's quite hazy right now. certainly not clear.
2 - lsu - got a big chance to stake claim to top spot this weekend. would probably have best resume too, if they win.
3 - uga - steady, but not really flashy. tenn gave them more than i anticipated they would, but still a top notch team.
4 - uf - best description i've seen for uf: despite their best efforts, florida remains undefeated. but old adage is good teams find ways to win ugly. and boy did they do that.
5 - au - just no one else to put here really.
6 - mizzou - quietly turning in a decent season.
7 - aTm - not really sure where to put them.
8 - ole miss - not too bad, actually.
9 - msu - don't screw it up, cowbells.
10 - usc - hey, you're not the worst!
11 - kentucky - really turning out worse than i thought.
12 - arky - about what i thought.
13 - vandy - at least they got an fbs win.
14 - tenn - only p5 team without an fbs win. but seriously, showed some heart vs uga for first time all year, i think.

It's tempting to think UT's problems are talent related when you watch them or follow their highlights in the press.  But the 4-year recruiting rankings have them #17 nationally, and #7 in the SEC.

Recruiting rankings aren't everything, but they're definitely something, and Tenn. shouldn't be this bad.  They don't play like a team with Top 20 talent and they don't beat teams they "should."

I'm starting to think the problem is not just the HC, though I'm not sure the powers at Rocky Top will realize that in time for it to matter for Pruitt.  Ah well, if Aranda moves on we'll just take Pruitt for our DC, I guess.

The Vols have some talent, yes, but some of that has departed of course.  They have lacked a QB, a rather key position to lack.  Mauer might be that guy now.

They have some good WRs.  Their OL is mediocre, not a good spot for that.  Their defense is, well, so-so I think.  They had a lot of turnovers in their other games that cost them.  They were close to beating BYU (and Georgia State, if close means anything).  They could be 3-2 now and looking at some bowl potentials.

They might beat Miss State and have a good shot at Vandy and UK and USCe, maybe not Mizzou,  My opinion is that Jones crippled that team's mentality, they had prima donnas who didn't want to work very hard and thought they were "special".  Pruitt will have to work them out of the program to get to the fairly talented but young players who will do it HIS WAY.

I'm just wondering if this season keeps going south, if Pruitt is going to get the time I think he probably deserves.  I'm not so sure UT isn't getting their pitchforks ready for him already, if they can't make a bowl.

The Vol fans definitely want him gone, many of them.  The more sane types realize he needs time and the program was a disaster.

Most of them figured on an 8-4 season, certainly with 4 OOC wins as they don't play a P5 program.  Then you beat UK/Vandy/USCe and snag one from Mizzou/Miss State.

That 0-2 start was obviously crippling to bowl aspirations.  The could still win out other than Bama, which obviously would save Pruitt, but make fans angry about what might have been.  That would be 7-5.  That first week's loss really sticks for their fans obviously.

i haven't looked in a couple years, but when i did a couple years back, tenn "good" recruiting rankings were a misnomer. they consisted of mostly decently rated skill players, very very few good rated trench players (ol, dl, lb), and really just few trench players of any rating compared to typical sec classes. i think they went 3 recruiting cycles with only 5 oline recruited, and only 1 was 4* or above. that's wont hack it in sunbelt, much less sec.

that might have changed, and i suspect with pruitt it's at least attempted to change it. but it's gonna be a long road back.

Yeah, they lost a legacy 5 star OL to UGA, Cade Mays.  He was lined up to sign with them.

They are soft in the trenches.  The MSU game will be interesting, if they win that, they could get to 6-6 plausibly.

Since we've derailed this thread already, I'm just gonna leave this here.

Y'all....this is hilariously awesome.  Been making the rounds on twitter this week.  Jamie Erdahl still sounds like a human being.  Orgeron really is an ogre.

Heh.  Back on the rankings in the OP, they look good to me.  I might tick the Vols up a bit, but who cares?

The bottom half of the conference is obviously pretty weak.

tenn probably could be put 11-12th, but until they win an fbs game, i'm keeping them at bottom.

Did anybody catch that South Carolina game?  :57:

There's no reason to have Alabama ranked ahead of LSU.  The discrepancy in their resumes is more than enough to overcome any eye-test or helmet BS...AND LSU is just as impressive in the eye test.

They'll eventually play and settle it, but for now, Alabama is ranked ahead of LSU based solely on non-performance criteria.  We'll see how it goes later today.

I think there's something to be said for Alabama not having been threatened yet.  LSU has played two games already it could've lost.

Maybe I have a believe-it-when-I-see-it bias, but Alabama still looks like the better team.  More complete team, definitely.  There's nothing LSU can do that Alabama can't do, and Alabama has a better pass rush.

The best team Alabama has played is ________________.

Fill in the blank.  Hint:  it doesn't matter who you put, the point is the same.
