Vols 247 recruiting rankings:

2017 - 17th
2016 - 14th
2015 -  4th
2014 -  7th

UGA

2017 - 3rd
2016 - 6th
2015 - 6th
2014 - 8th

I don't know how much real difference there is between say 6th and 14th.  Those kids would be sophomores now.
There's definitely a difference there, but it's not about this group of players is better than that group of players.  It's about having more top-end players and/or a deeper pool of players and/or better young players facing the starters in practice.
And dont' forget, in the SEC, 15th in the country can mean 9th in the conference.  It's nuts.

Eh... what is a five star recruit with a middle school coach? What is a two star with a master?

I watched TCU and oSu play last week... they were dancing on O with smooth execution and deliberate movement... watch a CBJ team and tell me what you see?  Sorry..  honey moon is over... do or die, Butch... all other aspects he offers have panned out except for the metric that matters.

Another factor on recruiting is how many players left early.  Georgia had most of their senior class return on defense and at running back (both Michel and Chubb obviously).  Two of their senior LBs could have declared.

I think the Vols lost a few rising seniors on defense.

I'm very worried about this game.  UGA is on a high, and in the past that has been followed by mysteriously poor play on the road year after year.

Wow, look at that first half.  Has a coach ever been fired at halftime?

UT's drive chart vs UGA:
INT
Punt
Punt
Punt
Punt
Fumble
Punt
INT
Punt

Longest drive:  28 yards

The Vols had a couple of tough breaks go against them.  They'll be back for the second half.

The Dawg defense might be pretty decent.  The announcer called them "Alabama East".

So, Miss State no longer looks like a very good win especially and Tennessee indeed is a dumpster on fire.

the fact about CBJ is he is consistent.  he's just as consistent as St. Nick Saban or Belichick.. he's just on the side of the ledger opposite them.

CBJ is a good if not great team manager or program manager.  he is not very good leader of the team.  the tropps don't rally to him, they hardly seem to respond to him on the field.  he plays in fear of losing.  that filters through the ranks.  he's hardly a confident image but instead something that appears to be trying really hard to be taken seriously and 'look' the part, but without authenticity.

here is the thing and i've said it before- it isn't the components of the team, it's the coaching and the (lack of) mojo.  There isn't a decided leader on the team- such as A.J. Jackson was- where the team played above their station simply because their leader demanded it.  they lack confidence, and because their coach exudes the fear of losing (doing something wrong)- if their coach has no confidence in them, why should they have confidence in themselves?

when that dude coaches dingle-dangle-dangling-free-unafraid (which is usually when he is playing from behind and truly has nothing to lose) he does 'okay'.. i'm somewhat fascinated how nobody has put this together about him in the five years he's been at UT.

Well John Kelly could be that guy, but......he has the big TD vs Florida, then gets the 15 yard penalty.  He has the big run vs UGA, but fumbles at the end of it.

*I think you meant AJ Johnson?

Funny quote from UF columnist:

"Georgia has outscored its last two SEC opponents 72-3. To which Alabama said, “Hold my beer.” The Tide’s combined score in their last two games against Vanderbilt and Ole Miss has been 124-3."

I did try to tell people MSU isn't as good as we made them look.  But it's still a good win for UGA.  Throttling a mediocre team 31-3 or whatever it was is what a very good team should be doing.

I think the Vols with a Jake Fromm type at QB could be a pretty solid team this year.  QD showed me nothing in that game.  Now maybe he was under pressure and the Dawgs seemed to be covering receivers pretty well.

One of the INTs UGA had was plausibly due to premature contact (PI) that was not called.  The butt snap fumble was probably not a designed play.  That shifted the momentum.  Tenn had just gotten a turnover on an errant pass.

Fromm does tend to lock in on where he's going to throw the ball often as not.  Other teams will see that, and perhaps we can turn that into a hitch and go.
