I think where Venables failed was assuming that the offense would continue to hum, as if on autopilot, despite the departure of Heisman Candidate QB Dillon Gabrie, now at #1 Oregon, l and OC Jeff Lebby, now failing as HFC at Mississippi State.
We didn't have an experience QB to step in and run the offense. And our OC/Co-OC lashup of two former OU players (Seth Littrell and Joe Jon Finley) was a flop.
Meanwhile, Venables had rebuilt the defense, which has played well this season, despite the offense's ineptitude and torrent of turnovers. It hasn't helped that our top 5 WRs have been injured the entire season. Or that we had our 9th OL lineup Saturday night. But, against Bama, the offensive line seemed to gel, and the offense did one thing well--it ran the ball effectively and only gave up one turnover, a fumble approaching the Bama red zone on the first (IIRC) possession.
