Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman was named The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Weekafter his Big 12 record-breaking performance last week.
The Red Raiders took down Houston 63-49 in a historic outing by the freshman quarterback, who threw for 605 yards with five touchdowns. Bowman completed 45-of-59 passes and recorded the fifth 600-yard game in Texas Tech history. The Grapevine, Texas, native broke the Big 12 single-game freshman passing record with his 605 yards, a record previously set by former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II (598 yards, Nov. 29, 2014 vs. Baylor).
After the notable performance on the weekend, to go with the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week designation, Bowman was tabbed the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week and the Walter Camp National Player of the Week.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.
Three others from the Big 12 were named honorable mentions for the week: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma, QB, Jr.), Ta’Zhawn Henry (Texas Tech, RB, Fr.), and Antoine Wesley (Texas Tech, WR, Jr.).
