Six Schools Represented on Hornung and Wuerffel Watch Lists

Eight student-athletes were named to the watch lists for the 2018 Paul Hornung Award and the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy.

The Paul Hornung Award is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in major college football. Big 12 candidates include TCU WR KaVontae Turpin and West Virginia WR Marcus Simms.

The Award was created by LSC in January 2010 with the support of Paul Hornung, a native and lifelong resident of Louisville and member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. WVU’s Tavon Austin won the Paul Hornung Award in 2012.

The winner of the 2018 Paul Hornung Award will be honored at the annual Award dinner held at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville in March 2019.

The 2018 Wuerffel Trophy recognizes six from the Big 12, which include LB Joe Dineen Jr. (Kansas), OL Dalton Risner (Kansas State), LB Caleb Kelly (Oklahoma), DE Ben Banogu (TCU), WR Collin Johnson (Texas) and QB Will Grier (West Virginia).

The trophy is presented by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The Wuerffel Trophy is the only major college football award that places the majority of its voting emphasis on Community Service.

The Big 12 has had three previous winners of the Wuerffel Trophy, with Ty Darlington (Oklahoma) being the most recent recipient of the award in 2015.

The winner of the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy will be revealed at the 50th Annual All Sports Association Awards Dinner on February 15, 2019 at the Emerald Coast Convention Center in Fort Walton Beach Florida.
