Mackey and Rimington Watch Lists Unveiled

A combined nine Big 12 student-athletes were named to the John Mackey Award and Rimington Trophy Watch Lists.

Four Big 12 schools are represented on the John Mackey Award list with Chase Allen (Iowa State), Mavin Saunders (Kansas), Grant Calcaterra (Oklahoma) and Andrew Beck (Texas).

The John Mackey Award, presented since 2000, is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. Mark Andrews (Oklahoma) became the eighteenth player to win the John Mackey Award in 2017 and the first player from the Big 12 to earn this accolade.

The John Mackey Award Selection Committee will announce the award recipient on December 5, 2018 and present the trophy live on December 6, 2018 at The Home Depot College Football Awards.

The Rimington Trophy Committee also announced today that five Big 12 centers have been named to the watch list. The Rimington Trophy is given each season to the nation’s most outstanding center in Division I football.

The candidates representing the Big 12 for this year include Sam Tecklenburg (Baylor), Adam Holtorf (K-State), Jonathan Alvarez (Oklahoma), Zach Shackelford (Texas) and Paul Stawarz (Texas Tech).

The Rimington Trophy honors Dave Rimington, a consensus First Team All-American center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982 and the nation’s only two-time John Outland Trophy winner.

The Big 12 won the inaugural award in 2000 with Nebraska’s Dominic Raiola.

The Rimington Trophy committee uses three prestigious teams to determine the winner: Walker Camp Foundation (WCF), Sporting News (SN) and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, January 12, 2019.
