ATLANTA — Finally, SEC Media Days is over and all 14 teams have been heard. It wasn’t the most exciting event and it was interesting to be somewhere else. But the most exciting conversation of the week was a bar argument about whose name was more recognizable nationally — McKenzie Milton or Feleipe Franks?
Or this — with the new coaches in the league, half of the head coaches have names that begin with the letter M.
At any rate, I do this annually, ranking the coaches based on their presentations at SEC Media Days.
1. Nick Saban — Even though he had a cold, he was interesting and got one of the few laughs from the humorless media.
2. Will Muschamp — He was funnier last year, but he was still very relaxed and did well.
3. Dan Mullen — Mullen was so upbeat it almost made me change my vote in the East. Almost.
4. Jimbo Fisher — He talked so fast it was hard to get it all, but the Texas A&M coac seemed to be pretty honest with his responses.
5. Matt Luke — I’m always impressed with the guy, which is one reason he is the Ole Miss coach.
6. Chad Morris — Not bad, but nothing special.
7. Joe Moorhead — He was very confident and he should be considering the team Mullen left him.
8. Derek Mason — He was passionate, that’s for sure.
9. Kirby Smart — There was a certain inner confidence that should scare the East.
10. Jeremy Pruitt — Not a lot of excitement there.
11. Barry Odom — Barry Odom was Barry Odom.
12. Ed Orgeron — Seriously, I was out of the room and heard this grumbling noise when I walked back and it was just him on the mike.
13. Mark Stoops — No offense, there wasn’t much there.
14. Gus Malzahn — Look, it’s not that he was bad. He just didn’t say a lot.
