Maxwell & Bednarik Watch Lists Announced

The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch lists for the 82nd annual Maxwell Award and the 24th annual Chuck Bednarik Award.

Eighteen Big 12 players were named to both watch lists, with eight being featured on the Maxwell Award watch list and 10 featured on the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list.

Oklahoma and West Virginia both saw two players named to the Maxwell Award watch list, while TCU, Texas and Kansas were among the programs with two honorees as well for the Bednarik Award watch list.

The Maxwell Award, which is named after Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, has been given to America’s College Player of the Year since 1937. A player, a sportswriter and an official, Maxwell was a constant presence in the football world.

The Maxwell candidates representing the Big 12 are RB David Montgomery (Iowa State), RB Alex Barnes (K-State), RB Rodney Anderson (Oklahoma), QB Kyler Murray (Oklahoma), RB Justice Hill (Oklahoma State), RB Darius Anderson (TCU), QB Will Grier (West Virginia) and WR David Sills V (West Virginia).

Annually, similar to the Maxwell Award, the Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. A former standout at Penn and the Philadelphia Eagles, Chuck Bednarik is a current member of the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of ’69 and the NFL Hall of Fame’s Class of ’67.

Bednarik candidates from the Big 12 for this year include CB Brain Peavy (Iowa State), DT Daniel Wise (Kansas), LB Joe Dineen Jr. (Kansas), LB Justin Phillips (Oklahoma State), DE Ben Banogu (TCU), LB Ty Summers (TCU), LB Breckyn Hager (Texas), LB Gary Johnson (Texas), LB Dakota Allen (Texas Tech) and LB David Long Jr. (West Virginia).

The Big 12 has had five previous winners of the Maxwell Award, with Baker Mayfield, QB (Oklahoma) being the most recent recipient of the award in 2017, and three previous honorees of the Bednarik Award.

The last time a Big 12 athlete won the Bednarik Award was back in 2009 as Ndamukong Suh, DT (Nebraska) was named a recipient of the award.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced on October 29, 2018, while the three finalists for each award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 6, 2018.
