I had an opportunity to sit down with former Florida star wide receiver Chris Doering recently. The Gators’ all-time leader in touchdown receptions addressed several topics, but mainly the situation at wide receiver.
I wrote a story on his overall take on the wideout positions and how the players should be better with better coaching from Dan Mullen and Billy Gonzales.
He also talked about some individual receivers. His comments follow.
Doering on Ole Miss transfer Van Jefferson:
“When you get a guy that’s a proven commodity within the conference. … Jefferson. I love that Ole Miss receiving corps. He was the guy that’s shown a lot of productivity in this conference. Having a guy that can come in, that has those numbers, and can be a leader within that group, I think that’s something they definitely need.”
Doering on Ohio State transfer Trevon Grimes:
“You look at Grimes, you look at his body, he looks like an NFL guy right now. And he’s got a couple more years to develop.”
Doering on Grimes and Jefferson:
“Those two guys are guys that can definitely help elevate what the overall production is at the position. It’s a situation where they bring a little different coaching into this program. Clearly, they’ve been taught a little bit better or differently than what these guys at Florida that are currently on the roster have in recent years.”
Doering on Tyrie Cleveland:
“I had a chance to spend some time with him in the spring. I like what he’s done so far. But he’s really been more of a big-play, deep-ball guy. That is clearly something he’s got the skill set for. He’s a long, fast guy that can go up and get the football. I’d like to see him develop a little bit more of a total package there and be a guy that can catch more of the intermediate balls. That’s where coaching comes into play, being able to learn those short to intermediate routes. Anybody at the college level can run by somebody.”
Doering on Josh Hammond:
“I like Hammond. I think he’s been a guy we’ve talked about in the last couple of springs. I mentioned him last year in our season preview on the SEC Network as a guy that I expected to break out because of the spring he had, because of the fall he had. Catches the ball really well, is a technician when it comes to running routes. Again, the play calls and the lack of stability at the quarterback position have kept him from maybe living up to his potential. I’m excited to see what he can do now in this offense. Having watched his brother have success, being coached by Billy Gonzales a little bit there, then having been in Dan Mullen’s offense for a little bit, too. I’ve had a chance to talk to both of the Hammond brothers and Frankie is definitely helping him develop along the way.”
