GOING, GOING … MEH

This season’s worst home runs… This might have been the Year of the Home Run, but included among all the titanic moonshots and screaming front-row line drives are a bunch of homers that barely deserve the name. Some of them barely got out of the park. Others were the result of terrible swings. At least one broke up a perfect game, and that’s no fun. We’ve got the five worst home runs of an otherwise record-breaking season right here. Apologies in advance. Read More

THINGS TO CARE ABOUT

Three NFL players from a town of 300 … Generally, when you’re seeking talent for the highest level of professional sports, you need to cast a wide net. People who are large and fast and smart enough to play in the NFL aren’t exactly, you know, common. But for the small town of Bassfield, Mississippi, that hasn’t been the case. Though it has only 300 people, three of its former residents are currently playing in the NFL. We’ve got the story of just what the heck is going on there. Read More

“RIP my mentions” … Sometimes, fans get very angry at an athlete when he or she makes a mistake. “Oh, gosh darn it,” they say (this is a paraphrase). “I should let that athlete know I disapprove of their mistake.” Then the fans head to social media to do so. Now, of course, some of these fans aren’t being super careful when they type in the athlete’s username, so sometimes they get a person who shares the athlete’s name. We talked to some of those people about what it’s like to be yelled at by thousands of people for something you definitely did not do. Read More

Pulisic on the bench? He’s the next great hope of American soccer, but so far in his time at Chelsea, Christian Pulisic has had difficulty finding playing time. Despite some flashes of brilliance, he hasn’t exactly had the impact both U.S. and Chelsea fans were hoping for when Pulisic joined the team. Is it growing pains or a sign of something more worrying? OVERHEARD

“In the wise words of Freddie Kitchens, if you don’t wear orange and brown, you don’t matter, and Rex Ryan doesn’t have any colors right now for a reason. So, it’s OK.”

REMEMBER WHEN?

WHAT’S ON TONIGHT?

Navy at Memphis (8 p.m. ET, ESPN): Navy will have its hands full stopping Memphis’ running attack if the Tigers’ win against South Alabama is any indication. Both Kenny Gainwell and Kylan Watkins rushed for more than 100 yards in that game, and Memphis remained undefeated.

Eagles at Packers (8:20 p.m. ET, FOX/NFL): The NFC North is undefeated against the rest of the league, which is not great news for a 1-2 Eagles team visiting the Packers. One bit of good news for Philadelphia: Green Bay’s normally high-flying scoring attack is currently 28th in the NFL in total offense.

Always Late with Katie Nolan (12:30 a.m. ET, ESPN2): She’s back! But with a brand-new home. For Season 2 of her late-night sports comedy show, Katie Nolan is taking her talents to ESPN2. There will be jokes. There will be laughs. You won’t want to miss it — trust us on this.
