THINGS FALL APART
The biggest stadium mishaps … There was a fire on the field at the Colts-Titans game on Sunday, and though fortunately nobody was hurt, it’s a reminder that all kinds of mini-disasters can happen at a sporting event. That got us thinking about the strangest things that have happened on the field at games in years past. From bees to floods to (gasp!) the wrong uniforms, here are the most important mishaps to remember. Read More
THINGS TO CARE ABOUT
Our NFL rankings’ most pleasant surprises … Week 2 is in the books, and certain things about the NFL’s power rankings are beginning to coalesce. We know who the contenders are, we have a pretty good sense of who’s in trouble (see: Dolphins, Miami), and we’ve got a whole heap of teams in the middle that could go either way. This week’s edition of our NFL rankings has a twist: We asked our experts to list the pleasantest surprises from each squad. Yes, even the teams at the bottom (see: Dolphins, Miami). Read More
Eli Manning: Hall of Famer? Sunday might have been the last time we see Elisha Nelson Manning take a snap, as the Giants announced Tuesday that Daniel Jones will be the starter in Week 3. Manning has two Super Bowl wins (over the Patriots, no less) on his résumé, but the question of his worthiness for the Hall of Fame (his career record is exactly .500, for example) is a complicated one. On this date in 2010, Michigan State made the gutsy call to fake a game-tying field goal in overtime against Notre Dame. Did it work? Like a charm. Watch
WHAT’S ON TONIGHT?
Rays at Dodgers (8:10 p.m. ET, ESPN+): The Dodgers have clinched their division, but the Rays are in a knockdown, drag-out fight for the final spot in the AL wild-card race. It’s about that time in MLB’s late September stretch when teams with nothing to gain start facing off against teams with nothing to lose, and the games that result tend to be surprisingly exciting.
Cruz Azul vs. Tigres UANL (10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2): The first Leagues Cup final features two squads from Liga MX battling it out. Cruz Azul defeated the LA Galaxy in August’s semifinal match, and Tigres took down Club América on penalty kicks.
