Gators host FSU in Top-25 match

After a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Honda of Gainesville Gators Invitational, Florida stayed steady at No. 11 in the AVCA Top-25 poll.

Florida started out the tournament with a four-set win over South Florida on Friday afternoon, then picked up a sweep over James Madison on Friday evening. UF closed out the weekend with a five-set victory over Long Beach State on Saturday.

The Gators continue their home schedule with a matchup against in-state rival No. 23 Florida State at 6 p.m. today (SEC Network). Florida has a busy weekend with the Gators Invitational, hosting Northern Arizona, Liberty and Louisiana on Friday and Saturday.

This is the 63rd meeting between the two programs since the inception of Florida’s volleyball program in 1984. The Gators hold the 42-20 series record over the Seminoles, including a 24-6 record in Gainesville.

Both Florida and Florida State come into the match with a 5-2 overall record.

The last time these two in-state rivals faced off was in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament on Nov. 29. Florida swept Florida State in Orlando, Fla., taking the match 25-21, 25-20, 25-13.

Nebraska, Stanford and Texas are the top three teams in the poll.

Kara is Offensive Player of Week

The first three goals of her Gator career earned Vanessa Kara the Southeastern Conference Offensive Soccer Player of the Week award.

She is the second Gator to claim the honor, as junior Deanne Rose who won the season’s first award.

Kara scored the opening two goals in Florida’s 4-0 win against Florida Gulf Coast last Thursday. She turned in Florida’s middle goal in Sunday night’s 3-0 win against Miami.

SEC play begins Thursday with the Gators traveling to Baton Rouge, La., to face 2018 SEC Tournament champion LSU (2-4-1 at 8 p.m.
