Two Big 12 soccer teams were included in the latest United Soccer Coaches (USC) Top 25 poll, as Kansas jumped four spots to No. 14 and Oklahoma State entered the rankings for the first time this season at No. 25. Additionally, TCU, West Virginia and Texas Tech all received votes.
The 14th-ranked Jayhawks are coming off another undefeated weekend in which they picked up two shutout victories on the road. KU defeated Northwestern 1-0 and Western Michigan 2-0 to improve to 7-1 on the season. Senior defender Addisyn Merrick was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after the Jayhawks allowed just eight total shots in their two weekend games. Kansas also boasts a plus-15 goal differential, good for third in the Conference, one spot behind Oklahoma State whose plus-16 differential ranks second in the league.
The newly-ranked Cowgirls check in at No. 25, their first appearance in the USC poll this season, after securing the league’s highest-ranked victory of the 2019 season. OSU took down former No. 8 Penn State 2-1 on the road in overtime and topped Omaha 1-0 at home to remain unbeaten on the year. The Cowgirls currently sit sitting atop the league standings at 6-0-1 and are tied with the Jayhawks for fewest goals allowed in the Conference with three.
TCU, West Virginia and Texas Tech all received votes this week, giving the Conference its third consecutive week with at least six teams ranked or receiving votes.
Regular-season action continues with a slate of 16 matches over four days as non-conference play wraps up. Big 12 conference action is set to begin next Thursday, Sept. 26, with eight teams taking the pitch.
