THINGS TO CARE ABOUT

The grandmaster diet … Did you know that pro chess players can burn up to 6,000 calories a day while barely moving? Yep, you read that right. Studies suggest that grandmasters’ stress responses to chess are on par with what elite athletes experience. So two hours of sitting and playing chess can roughly equate to what Roger Federer would burn in an hour of singles tennis. Sounds absurd, right? That’s what we thought, but it turns out the evidence is overwhelming. Read More

That’s Madam President, Nneka Ogwumike to you … For someone with Nneka Ogwumike’s resume, she often finds herself left out of the conversation regarding the game’s best players, but Ogwumike doesn’t care. She just assumes it has something to do with her name being tough to pronounce. So given the overwhelming discrepancy between teams like the Yankees and the Orioles, we set out to determine an answer to this question: How many of the bad teams would it take to make up one of the great teams? OVERHEARD

“Some people want to play the blame game. … They want to play the shame game, like we should be ashamed because we didn’t win a gold medal? That’s a ridiculous attitude. It’s immature, it’s arrogant.”

On this date in 1981, Sugar Ray Leonard rallied in Rounds 13 and 14 to beat Thomas Hearns in “The Showdown” after Leonard’s trainer, Angelo Dundee, said the now legendary words: “You’re blowing it now, son! You’re blowing it!”
