Bryce Torneden of Kansas and Denzel Goolsby of K-State have been named to the 2019 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team as announced by Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association. Twenty-two student-athletes and one honorary coach were voted to the team from an initial list of 137 nominees.
A panel of esteemed judges, which includes ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit and former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, is responsible for selecting the student-athletes who stand out for their leadership in local communities and overall commitment to giving back.
Torneden, a senior safety from Lawrence, Kan., is the fourth Jayhawk all-time and first since 2009 to earn a spot on the prestigious team. He has participated in numerous community service initiatives with a focus on impacting the Lawrence, Kan. community. Torneden is most proud of his role with Team Impact, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams.
With Team Impact, Torneden has led groups in various activities, including school tours and bowling. He has also spent countless hours visiting local elementary schools and doing his best to impact the next generation of children.
Goolsby, a senior safety from Wichita, Kan., is the fourth Wildcat all-time and second in as many years to be named to the team. His biggest initiative off the field is with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Manhattan, Kan., which he has worked with since March of 2016. He has also given countless tours of the K-State football complex, notably as a fundraiser for Jamie’s Wish Foundation which raises money for cancer patients.
Additionally, Goolsby regularly visits Meadowlark Hills Retirement Home and Avita Senior Living, as well as mentoring several underprivileged children in the Manhattan, Kan. area. He also makes countless visits to elementary schools, including to his sister’s in Denver to speak to her students, and serves as a volunteer speaker at Rock Hill Church.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team will be invited to the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl to join Tebow and Allstate volunteers in giving back to New Orleans through a special community service project. The team will also be recognized at halftime during the game.
Fans can vote for the 2019 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain through Nov. 22. The team captain will be honored at The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN later this season.
