Hurts, TCU Standouts Earn Week 1 Awards

September 03, 2019

Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts earned a pair of Big 12 weekly awards, while TCU’s Garret Wallow and Jonathan Song were recognized.

After a strong debut for the Sooners, Hurts was named the Big 12’s Offensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week. Wallow picked up his first Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Song was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week for the first time.

Hurts accounted for six touchdowns and set the record for total offensive yards by a player in his OU debut with 508 yards, as the Sooners beat Houston 49-31. Hurts completed 20-for-23 through the air for 332 yards and three touchdowns (no interceptions), while running 16 times for a career-high 176 yards (11.0 average) and three more scores.

Wallow registered a team-best 13 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, and one sack. His 13 total tackles and 3.5 TFL were both career-highs and the fourth time in his career with at least 10+ stops.

Song, a senior kicker from Fort Worth, set a career high with five field goals. Song was successful from 24, 36, 19, 34 and 38 yards. His five field goals are the most by a Horned Frog since Jaden Oberkrom had a single-game TCU and Big 12 record six in 2012 versus Texas Tech.
