The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its preseason national coaches’ poll and regional rankings this week. Both the men’s and women’s cross country programs from Iowa State and Oklahoma State were included in the national rankings. Additionally, the Conference had 12 of its 19 total cross country programs ranked in the regional polls.
No. 5 ISU and No. 7 OSU landed in the top-10 of the men’s cross country national poll, while Texas also received votes. On the women’s side, the Cyclones were slotted at No. 17 while the Cowgirls placed at No. 19, with Texas and West Virginia also receiving votes.
In the regional rankings, four men’s teams and eight women’s teams were ranked, accounting for a total of 64 percent of all Big 12 cross country programs. Three men’s teams are included in the Midwest Region with No. 1 Iowa State, No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Kansas, while No. 2 Texas checks in on the South Central Region rankings. For the women’s Midwest Region, Iowa State claims the No. 1 spot alongside No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 13 Kansas. No. 2 Texas heads up three Big 12 women’s programs in the South Central Region, with No. 6 Baylor and No. 14 TCU also included. The Texas Tech women placed at No. 15 in the Mountain Region and the West Virginia women claimed the No. 5 spot in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The 2019 cross country season is set to begin this week, with four Big 12 teams in action Friday, August 30, and another four opening the year on Saturday, August 31.
