SAY WHAT?
THE (trademarked) Ohio State University … We’re not joking about this, so please believe us when we tell you that Ohio State is trying to trademark the word “the” for use on clothing and hats. In case you’re wondering: yes, this is a thing you can do if you can prove “a distinctive usage outside the traditional meaning.” Like, say, distinguishing yourself from a horde of imitation Ohio State universities by reminding all around that you are THE Ohio State University. Just in case this is approved, we’re going to spend the rest of this newsletter avoiding the word “the” entirely. Starting … now. Read more
THINGS TO CARE ABOUT
How football took over America … The … ahhhhh, gosh darn it. Well, we’ll just have to take our chances with that word going forward. Anyway. The NFL turns 100 years old next year, and its growth from humble beginnings to what it is now in many ways mirrors the growth of America. From the northeast corner of Ohio to every corner of the nation (and possibly beyond), here’s how football came to dominate the pro sports world. Read More
Is Bryce a bust? His first season in Philadelphia has been … fine, mostly, but considering the hype surrounding Bryce Harper (and the Phillies’ substantial investment in him), it’s worth asking if the team made the wrong decision in committing to him. You’ll have to go back to Harper’s introductory news conference to remember that judging him by a single season might be missing the bigger picture … and that he’s working on a far different timetable than you might expect. A football revolution at Dartmouth? Nearly a decade ago, Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens decided that his players wouldn’t be tackling one another during practice, and as a result his team was at an extreme competitive disadvantage and lost all of its games. Wait, no, I’m sorry, I’m getting a note here … actually, what happened is the team’s injury rate fell dramatically, and since 2014 Dartmouth has won 76% of its games. How did Teevens pull it off? Some robots, some virtual reality, and a willingness to buck conventional wisdom. Read More

REMEMBER WHEN?
On this date in 2012, Felix Hernandez threw the 23rd perfect game in MLB history, blanking the Tampa Bay Rays in a 1-0 victory. Hernandez’s perfecto is baseball’s most recent, which is a little weird considering for a few years there it looked as if perfect games were becoming much more common — we’re talking “three in the same season” common. As it turns out, that trend was just a bit of a fluke.
WHAT’S ON TODAY?
Little League World Series (1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. ET on ESPN and 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2): The LLWS begins in earnest today with four games in the youth baseball haven of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. If you tune in, you could be getting a sneak peek at the talent of tomorrow, as scores of major leaguers (Cody Bellinger! Gary Sheffield!) got their first taste of a national stage at the LLWS.
Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers (1:10 p.m. ET, ESPN+): Slugger Daniel Vogelbach and the Mariners head to to the Motor City for a matchup with Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers.
Oakland Raiders vs. Arizona Cardinals (8 p.m. ET, ESPN): The Raiders have been in the news recently for Antonio Brown-related reasons, from his frostbitten feet to his search for a new (old) helmet. It might come as a bit of a relief for Raiders fans just to see them actually play football, even if it’s just a preseason game.
