Twenty-four current or former Big 12 student-athletes representing nine different nations competed at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, from July 24 to August 11. Of the 24, 13 athletes combined to win a total of 15 medals at the Games, including five gold, seven silver and three bronze.
Both Keilani Ricketts, an Oklahoma softball student-athlete from 2010-13, and Cat Osterman, a Texas Longhorn from 2003-06, garnered a gold medal with the USA national softball team. The U.S. captured the title with a 3-1 win over Canada in the grand final, capping off the tournament with a 7-1 record.
Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix captured his first gold as a USA Wrestling Senior Team member with an 11-0 finals win in the 57-kilogram weight class, while Texas’ swimming alum and 11-time NCAA champion Will Licon earned gold medals in the 200m Individual Medley and 200m Breaststroke.
Junior Longhorn swimmer Sam Pomajovich won a pair of silver medals in the 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay and 200m Butterfly, while current UT teammate Drew Kibler swam away with two silver medals in the 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay and 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay and a bronze in the 200m Freestyle.
Iowa State’s junior middle blocker Candelaria Herrera earned a bronze medal with the Argentina national team after taking down Brazil in the third place match in a 3-0 sweeping fashion.
A pair of current women’s basketball student-athletes from the Conference took home the silver medal with Team USA. Peyton Williams of Kansas State and Brittany Brewer of Texas Tech, both rising seniors in the 2019-2020 season, logged minutes with the red, white and blue at this year’s Pan Am Games.
Eight track and field athletes participated at the Games in 2019. Wil London of Baylor and Teahna Daniels of Texas were the only ones to come away with medals, as London snagged a silver for anchoring Team USA’s men’s 4×400-meter relay and Daniels collected a bronze medal for her efforts on Team USA’s women’s 4×100-meter relay.
Junior women’s soccer players Kim Rodriguez of Oklahoma State and Emily Alvarado of TCU appeared for the Mexican National Team in their fifth-place match against Paraguay. Alvarado, a goalkeeper, made her only start of the tournament and allowed just one goal, while Rodriguez netted a goal in the 5-1 Mexico victory.
