Ten Big 12 student-athletes were named to the preseason watch lists for the 2019 Paul Hornung Award and the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy.
The Paul Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football. Reminiscent of the award’s namesake, members of the watch list demonstrate a knack for scoring in numerous ways and play multiple positions.
This year’s Big 12 candidates include John Lovett of Baylor, Chuba Hubbard of Oklahoma State and Jalen Reagor of TCU. The league has had one previous recipient of the award, Tavon Austin of West Virginia, in 2012. The 2019 winner will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner on March 4, 2020.
The 2019 Wuerffel Trophy recognizes the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” the Big 12 has previously had three winners, most recently in 2015 as Oklahoma offensive lineman Ty Darlington was presented with the award.
Representing the league on the Wuerffel Trophy watch list is Iowa State’s Ray Lima, Kansas State’s Denzel Goolsby, Oklahoma’s Kenneth Murray, TCU’s Kellton Hollins, Texas’s Sam Ehlinger, Texas Tech’s Travis Bruffy and West Virginia’s Evan Staley.
The Wuerffel Trophy will announce its semifinalists on November 5 and its finalists on November 18. The formal announcement of the 2019 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation’s festivities on December 10.
