Texas A&M junior quarterback Kellen Mond is representing the Aggies at SEC Media Days, where he dished on his offseason progress, the escalated rivalry with LSU and why he thinks he’s the SEC’s best quarterback.
What has been your biggest change from Year 2 to Year 3?
“I think the biggest thing is just my leadership skills, and just being able to influence and elevate other players on the team. That’s kind of one thing I’ve been focusing on. And just trying to keep up with as much film as possible, but just my knowledge for the game speaks for itself. So I want to help other players realize so they can be leaders on the field, also.”
What did the end of last season do for the team, from the victory over LSU in seven overtimes to the performance in the bowl game?
“I think it just gave us a little bit more confidence, and it gives us a lot of confidence just going into this season. We’re a really confident team, we have a lot of players coming back, so we’re looking for a phenomenal season this year.”
With that said, how much did the game against LSU escalate the rivalry with the Tigers?
“It definitely amped up. A&M goes to their place this year, so we know it’s going to be a hostile environment, but it’s a lot of fun playing against guys you played against in high school. Obviously (LSU safety and former IMG Academy teammate) Grant Delpit is one of the top players in the country, so it’s definitely fun to compete against him.”
What was it like starting as a true freshman in the SEC?
“Obviously it was for a different coach, but it’s maybe like a deer-in-the-headlights. You don’t know exactly what is going on, but my second year, being a sophomore, I felt I was able to gain more knowledge of the game. And I felt that freshman year helped me and motivated me to work harder to be in the position that I’m in right now.
You recently said you feel you’re the SEC’s best quarterback, what skill-set do you possess that you feel makes you the best?
“Just I believe that my stride from my freshman year to sophomore year, just being able to develop more accuracy and more chemistry with my receivers. That’s kind of something I’ve been working on this entire offseason, just playing with more knee-bend, more on top of my toes and not being so flat-footed. But I definitely have a lot of confidence in myself, and I definitely know the coaches and players on my team do, too.”
