Louisiana State quarterback Joe Burrow took the main stage Monday afternoon at SEC Media Days, where he proceeded to dish on the 2019 Tigers, last season’s 7-overtime thriller vs. Texas A&M and more.
LSU seems to be on an upward trend after last season, how do you feel about this year’s team? Can you challenge Alabama?
“I think that, you know, we have a lot of experience coming back, and that bodes well for any football team in the country. And there’s a lot of hype coming into the year for us. If we do what we need to do, we can beat anybody in the country.”
What’s your advice to other transfer quarterbacks hoping to play immediately in the SEC, and what are your overall thoughts on transferring?
“Yeah, so I’ve talked to some of the young guys who have kind of been thinking about it, and what I always tell them is when you’re making the decision, make sure you don’t just wake up one day and the practice didn’t go well before and you’re like ‘Screw these guys, I’m leaving’. I think you need to really take a step back and look at the entirety of the situation, and make it a business decision rather than an emotional decision. I think guys want to play, and if you have an opportunity somewhere else that allows a better opportunity for you to play, I think you need to take it. And I think that’s good for college football, because more guys get to showcase their talents. And there’s some really good players out there that might be stuck behind someone who’s an NFL guy and they go somewhere else and light it up. I think that’s good for college football.”
Coach Orgeron has implied LSU will run more of a spread offense this season, how do you feel about the changes?
“I’m excited about it, and Coach Joe (Brady) has brought a lot of exciting things to our offense, and Coach (Steve) Ensminger has done a great job of coming up with his own things as well, and we’re kind of building this thing as an offense. Coach Joe didn’t come in and say ‘This is how we’re going to do it’, Coach (Ensminger) didn’t come in and say ‘No we’re not going to do it like that, we’re going to do it like this’. It’s kind of a communal idea space, and I’m excited about that.”
Joe, the Texas A&M—LSU game last season led the NCAA to approve a change to the overtime rules, are you happy about the changes?
“I mean, seven overtimes is obviously an anomaly. I don’t think there’s a lot of games that go into that many overtimes, but I think you do get into a player-safety issue if you’re going through seven to 10 overtimes. You’re going to have a lot more opportunities for injuries, and then some of the best players in the conference might not be there for the football play-off, SEC Championship game, so I think the changes are probably for the best.”
How long did it take your body to recover from the Texas A&M game last season?
“Oh, I was probably bruised for two to three weeks. I bruise very easily, I bruise like a peach. So I was probably sore for about a week, week-and-a-half, for sure.”
