It was June of 1992 when Steve Spurrier, fresh off Florida’s first official SEC title, called The Sun columnist Mike Bianchi with a new name for the stadium that would eventually bear his name.

The Swamp.

In the years that followed, there have been some unbelievable games and players. Sun writers Pat Dooley and Robbie Andreu came up with their rankings of the 25 best moments since 1992 when Spurrier gave it that moniker.

No. 4 — Oct. 6, 2018

Stewart’s sweet Pick-6

The set-up: Four weeks after being stunned at home against Kentucky, the Gators were back on their feet, riding a three-game winning streak and hoping to make a Swamp statement against No. 5 LSU.

The moment: In what had been a typical SEC defensive slugfest, the Gators found themselves down 19-14 following a 1-yard touchdown run by LSU running back Nick Brossette early in the fourth quarter. But the UF offense, which had sputtered for much of the game, had an answer — a 75-yard touchdown drive that put the Gators up 20-19 with 8:48 left in the game. The drive featured a 26-yard pass from Feleipe Franks to Van Jefferson, a 17-yard run by Lamical Perine and a 15-yard throwback pass from tight end Lucas Krull to Franks that put the Gators on the 2-yard line. Perine scored on the next play. The question now was: could the Gators make the score stand up?

The result: Following an exchange of punts, the Tigers took over on their 12-yard line with 2:21 left and a chance to pull out a win. But on a third-and-four from the 18, with The Swamp crowd loud and on its feet, sophomore safety Brad Stewart intercepted a Joe Burrow pass in the right flat and raced 25 yards for a touchdown, diving just inside the pylon with 1:45 to play. The Gators made the eight-point lead stand up, ending a last-second LSU threat with safety Donovan Stiner’s interception on the UF 34.

The quote: “(UF coach Dan Mullen) told me I should’ve taken a knee (instead of scoring),” Stewart said. “Now, we had to go back out there and finish this game off again.” — UF safety Brad Stewart

Reader’s input: Jarrod voted this as his favorite moment — “Tebow inducted into the ring of honor and Brad Stewart’s 25-yard pick 6 to seal the game. Massive dog pile formed in the stands after the interception-touchdown. Almost broke my back on the bleachers. Loved every second of it.”
