It was June of 1992 when Steve Spurrier, fresh off Florida’s first official SEC title, called The Sun columnist Mike Bianchi with a new name for the stadium that would eventually bear his name.

The Swamp.

In the years that followed, there have been some unbelievable games and players. Sun staff writers Robbie Andreu and Pat Dooley came up with their rankings of the 25 best moments since 1992 when Spurrier gave the stadium that moniker.

No. 24 — Oct. 3, 2015

Grier to Powell electricity

The set-up: Coming off a last-second win over Tennessee the week before, the No. 25 Gators were 4-0 in coach Jim McElwain’s first season and looking to make a statement against Ole Miss, the No. 3 team in the country that had beaten Alabama in Tuscaloosa two weeks earlier. The Rebels came into The Swamp on a roll, leading the nation in scoring and total yards.

The moment: After jumping out to an early 13-0 lead, the UF offense struggled through the second half of the first quarter and the first half of the second. Facing a third-and-six from the UF 23, quarterback Will Grier dropped back to pass and was blitzed. He found slot receiver Brandon Powell on a quick slant and delivered a strike about seven yards downfield. Powell made the catch, burst through two Ole Miss defenders and outraced the secondary for a 77-yard touchdown play.

The result: The long TD play established that the night was going to belong to the Gators, and it did. UF went on to a 38-10 victory in which Grier threw four TD passes and the defense held the high-octane Rebels to just 328 yards of total offense.

The quote: “It was only a week after the epic Grier-to-Callaway play ignited The Swamp and brought back memories of the good ol’ days. The place was packed and jumping for one of those great October night games. Ole Miss became the highest-ranked opponent to fall at Florida Field since Peyton Manning and No. 2 Tennessee in 1999.” — Chris Harry, Floridagators.com
