It was June of 1992 when Steve Spurrier, fresh off Florida’s first official SEC title, called The Sun columnist Mike Bianchi with a new name for the stadium that would eventually bear his name.

The Swamp.

In the years that followed, there have been some unbelievable games and players. Sun staff writers Robbie Andreu and Pat Dooley came up with their rankings of the 25 best moments since 1992 when Spurrier gave the stadium that moniker.

No. 25 — Nov. 24, 2007

Tebow runs over ’Noles

The set-up: Florida came in ranked No. 12 while FSU was struggling and unranked. Still, Seminole linebacker Geno Hayes couldn’t resist adding fuel to the rivalry by saying Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was “going down” and FSU was going to “smash his Heisman hopes.”

The moment: It was early, but it was spectacular. From the FSU 23, Tebow dropped back and immediately faced a pass rusher who had come free. Tebow somehow ducked under the defender and ran for paydirt. At the goal line, he crashed through three FSU defenders like they were a child’s building blocks, among them the aforementioned Hayes, for the score.

The result: Florida Field never really calmed down after that early TD and Tebow went on to account for five in a 45-12 rout. Tebow won the Heisman Trophy and, if any voters were looking for a punctuation mark on his season, this was it.

The quote: “I’m not sure they really wanted to tackle him.” — UF coach Urban Meyer on his Sunday TV show.
