Hill and Manoah Finalists for Respective Awards

June 06, 2019

Baylor’s Kyle Hill and West Virginia’s Alek Manoah were named finalists for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award and the Dick Howser Trophy, respectively.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association tabbed BU’s right-handed pitcher a finalist for the prestigious award, after a season in which the senior recorded 35 K’s in 23 appearances. Hill didn’t allow a single run through the 29.1 innings he pitched and allowed only 10 hits.

The Miami, Florida, native, Manoah, earned a spot as a finalist on the Dick Howser Trophy. During the 2019 campaign, the junior finished with a 9-4 record and a 2.08 ERA in 108.1 innings pitched. He struck out a school-record 144 batters, walked only 27, had a 0.91 WHIP and opponents only hit .190 against him.

As the baseball equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, the Dick Howser Trophy is the annual national award for the outstanding collegiate baseball player. The award was created on behalf of Dick Howser to promote baseball excellence and scholastic achievement for collegiate baseball.

Since the Stopper of the Year Awards’ inception in 2005, a student-athlete from a Big 12 institution has been the awards recipient on four occasions (2005, ’06, 2010, ’11), three of which hailed from Texas and one from Kansas.

Both awards are slated to be announced on Saturday, June 15.
