Texas’s Tripp Piperi captured his first NCAA Outdoor Track & Field individual national title in the shot put. The 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are being hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Piperi’s second toss on the day was not only a personal best for the sophomore, but it also marked the national title winning toss (69-3.25/21.11m).
This individual national championship marks the fourth by a Big 12 student-athlete in the event and the first of the 2019 outdoor national championship for the Conference.
Kansas’ Gleb Dudarev threw for 242-5/73.88m on his third hammer throw of the day. The three-time Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field hammer throw individual champion earned a second-place finish at the 2019 outdoor national event.
Competition for day two of the national championships will open with the second half of the decathlon events beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
A handful of women’s field events are set to start at 4:30 p.m. CT, while prelims for women’s running events cap off the day.
