Sixteen Big 12 baseball players were selected on the second day of the 2019 MLB Draft on Tuesday. Combined with the six selections in the first two rounds on Monday, the Conference had a total of 22 selections in the first 10 rounds, which is the second-highest amount in league history. A league-record 23 selections in the top-10 rounds were made in 2003.
Every Big 12 program had a player selected in the draft on Tuesday. Texas Tech led the way with three selections: outfielder Gabe Holt in the seventh round (233rd overall, Milwaukee Brewers), right-hander Caleb Kilian in the eighth round (236th overall, San Francisco Giants) and right-hander Taylor Floyd (313th, Milwaukee Brewers).
Kansas had two selections early in the day as right-hander Ryan Zeferjahn (107th, third round) and catcher Jaxx Groshans (167th, fifth round) were both taken by the Boston Red Sox.
A pair of Baylor hurlers were selected as lefty Cody Bradford was taken in the sixth round (175th overall) by Texas and right-handed reliever Kyle Hill in the 10th (306th overall) by Seattle.
TCU outfielder Johnny Rizer (198th overall by Baltimore) and infielder Jake Guenther (218th overall by Tampa) were picked in the seventh round. Also in the seventh round, Texas right-hander Blair Henley (226th overall) was nabbed by Houston and infielder David Hamilton (253rd) was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers eighth.
Oklahoma State RHP Logan Gragg (245th) heard his name called in the eighth round by St. Louis and Cowboy righty Peyton Battenfield’s (287th) was etched in the ledger in the ninth round by Houston.
In the eighth round, West Virginia catcher Ivan Gonzalez (230th by Chicago), Oklahoma right-hander Nathan Wiles (248th by Tampa) and K-State outfielder Will Brennan (250th by Cleveland) were all selected.
The Big 12 had four picks in the top-11 on Monday, which was the most in Conference history and the best among all conferences.
The third and final day of the draft (Rounds 11-40) is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT on Wednesday, June 5.
