IRVING, Texas – Five Big 12 programs earned spots to the 2019 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship with Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and West Virginia serving as regional hosts. Regional play begins on Friday, May 31, and runs through Monday, June 3 (if necessary). In addition to the three hosts, Baylor and TCU earned at-large berths to the field of 64.
This marks the 18th time in 23 years that at least five Big 12 teams will participate in the regionals. Overall, the Conference has made 118 NCAA appearances and owns a 233-166 (.584) mark in regional play. The Conference has three teams hosting NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2008 and sixth time overall.
Texas Tech was awarded the No. 8 overall national seed after finishing 39-17 overall and winning the Big 12 regular-season title with a 16-8 mark. The Red Raiders are hosting their fourth-consecutive regional and will face Army in a 3 p.m. CT matchup on Friday in Lubbock. Florida will play Dallas Baptist in the opposing contest.
Oklahoma State won the automatic bid and earned a No. 9 national seed after winning its third Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship title on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over West Virginia. The Cowboys were originally scheduled to host a regional in Stillwater, but the host site has been relocated to Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City due to heavy rain in the area over the last two weeks. OSU is making its 45th NCAA Championship appearance and will face Harvard in the first game on Friday in a 6 p.m. CT first pitch. Nebraska faces UConn in the other side of the Oklahoma City Regional. The winners in Lubbock and Oklahoma City will face each other in a Super Regional.
For the first time since 1955, West Virginia will host a regional in Morgantown. The Mountaineers earned the No. 15 seed after finishing 37-20 overall and 13-11 in Conference action. West Virginia faces Fordham in a 7 p.m. CT showdown on Friday. Duke takes on Texas A&M in the other contest. The Morgantown Regional winner faces the Nashville Regional victor next week.
Baylor makes its 21st NCAA Regional appearance with a trip to Los Angeles this weekend. The Bears (34-17, 14-8) face Loyola Marymount in a 3 p.m. CT matchup on Friday. Host school UCLA will play Omaha in the opening game. The Los Angeles winner advances to the Super Regional against the Corvallis winner.
TCU returned to the NCAA postseason with an at-large berth to the Fayetteville Regional. The Horned Frogs face California in a 6 p.m. CT matchup. The berth is the 16th overall appearance for TCU. Host school Arkansas faces Central Connecticut. Winner of the Fayetteville Regional will take on the Oxford Regional champion.
Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on www.NCAA.com/cws, Tuesday, June 4 at approximately 7 a.m. CT. The Men’s College World Series begins play Saturday, June 15, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.
