Orlando, Fla. – The doubles tandems of Kansas’ Nina Khmelnitckaia/Janet Koch and Sofia Blanco/Catherine Gulihur (OSU) garnered victories in Orlando, Florida, at the NCAA Tennis Championship.
KU’s No. 5-8-seeded duo captured a win in a tie-breaking thriller over Stanford’s Caroline Lampl/Kimberly Yee, 6-2, 3-6, [10-7], while the Cowgirl tandem dominated in straight sets against Marta Bellucco/Fatima Bizhukova (Wichita State), 6-1, 6-1.
On the men’s side, the No. 1-seeded doubles team of Jimmy Bendeck/Sven Lah earned a tie-break victory over UCF’s Trey Hilderbrand/Bogdan Pavel 4-6, 7-6, [11-9].
With the win, all three tandems advance to play in the round of 16 set for Wednesday, May 22.
In singles action, the 2019 Big 12 Player of the Year and Texas Tech’s senior, Felicity Maltby, earned a place in the round of 16 with a straight set win. No. 9-16-seeded Anastasia Rychagova of KU and OSU’s Katarina Stresnakova recorded wins on the second day of singles play.
Fresh off a national championship with the Texas men’s tennis team, No. 9-16 Yuya Ito secured his second win of the singles portion of the NCAA Tennis Championship. No. 3 Alex Rybakov of TCU took down fellow Big 12 opponent Alexandre Bakshi of Oklahoma 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16.
Singles action at the 2019 NCAA Tennis Championship is set to continue on Wednesday, May 22, as well as doubles competition.
