Texas captured the 2019 Big 12 Rowing Championship crown and an NCAA automatic qualifying bid on Sunday morning at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This marks Texas’ fifth consecutive Big 12 title and ninth Conference championship in the last 11 years.
The No. 4-ranked Longhorns dominated after placing first overall with 137 points in the Big 12 standings and accumulated 42 points in the automatic qualifying standings. Oklahoma placed second with 106 Big 12 points and third in AQ points with 30. K-State (91), Kansas (82) and West Virginia (49) rounded out the Big 12 standings.
Alabama finished second in the AQ standings with 31 points followed by Oklahoma (30), K-State (23), Kansas (20), Tennessee (16) and West Virginia (6).
Texas opened the day with a first-place finish in the Third Eight Final with a time of 6:42.108. Alabama crossed the line at 6:56.378 for second and Oklahoma took third at 6:58.102.
In the Second Four Final, the Longhorns again took the top spot on the podium with a finish time of 7:28.132 followed by Oklahoma at 7:33.659 and Alabama at 7:42.468.
Texas captured the gold medal in the First Four (7:31.335) followed by a silver medal placement from Alabama (7:38.416) and a bronze medal finish by Kansas State (7:43.712).
The Longhorns won the Second Eight with a time of 6:38.439. Kansas State placed second with a time of 6:51.353 followed by a bronze medal finish by Alabama (6:52.635).
UT completed the top-podium sweep with a first-place finish in the Grand Final with a time of 6:25.872. Oklahoma (6:40.582) came in second, followed by Alabama (6:43.054).
Next up, Big 12 squads will learn their NCAA fate during the Division I Rowing Championship selection show on Tuesday, May 21, at 4 p.m. CT. The NCAA Championships will be held May 31- June 2 at the Indianapolis Rowing Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.
