Texas Tech’s Divine Oduduru earned his second Performer of the Year award, headlining the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field postseason individual awards were announced as by the Conference office on Thursday. Honorees earning the distinction were selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches. Coaches were not permitted to vote for themselves nor their own student-athletes.
Oduduru was honored with the Performer of the Year award for the second consecutive year. This season he recorded the first sub 10-second 100-meter dash in conference championship history (9.99) to capture the title in back-to-back years. At the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco earlier this year, the junior ran the second-fastest collegiate 200-meter dash time, 19.76.
For the first time in Big 12 history, an Iowa State Cyclone was named the Outstanding Freshman of the Year as Keira Christie-Galloway garnered the honors. The rookie captured the first 100-meter hurdles title for a Cyclone at the Big 12 Championship, recording a time of 13.10. She also set the school record in the event on three separate occasions in 2019.
ISU’s Cailie Logue, the Big 12 Women’s Performer of the Year swept the 5,000m and 10,000m titles at Big 12 Outdoor Championship, which is the 10th time in championship history and fourth time in Iowa State history that the same student-athlete won both titles in the same year. Her 10K victory was won with an 11 second gap.
On the men’s side, Cordell Tinch (Kansas) was named the Outstanding Freshman of the Year. He capped off his season with a 110-meter hurdles win at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship – the first champion in the event for a KU student-athlete. The freshman earned Co-High Point Performer of the championship with 18 total points.
Texas Tech’s Wes Kittley coached the Red Raiders to its second-straight conference title and the fourth in program history. Kittley’s team successfully defended four of its event titles from last season’s championship meet, including the 4×100 relay, 100m, 400m hurdles, and discus. Coach Wittley was named the Big 12 Men’s Coach of the Year.
K-State’s women’s head coach Cliff Rovelto led the Wildcat women to a program record 156.5 points at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship. This point total marks the most points scored by a runner-up in Big 12 women’s championship history. Coach Rovelto was voted the Big 12 Women’s Coach of the Year.
