Norman, Oklahoma – Day two of the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship is in the books, as competition heats up at the John Jacobs Track & Field Complex. K-State’s women’s program (71 points) carried its day one lead into the close of day two, while Texas Tech’s men’s team (62 points) emerged as the front runner after the second day of action.

In the multi-events, Texas’ Ashtin Zamzow won the first gold medal of day two, her second of the 2019 outdoor championship, after completing the heptathlon (5817). The Longhorn is the first Big 12 heptathlon winner for the program. In the decathlon, Texas Tech freshman Axel Hubert captured the first gold in the event for TTU since 2004 as he recorded a personal-best 7,810 points.

Three K-State student-athletes won gold in their respective events as the men’s high jump champion (Tejaswin Shankar, 7-05.00/2.26m), the women’s long jump champion (Taishia Pryce, 21-00.75/6.42m) and the women’s shot put champion (Taylor Latimer, 58-02.50/17.74m) represented the Wildcats.

Shankar won the sixth high jump for K-State, the most by any program in the Big 12 in this event.

The men’s shot put winner, Tripp Piperi, garnered his second consecutive title, beating out 2017 champion Brett Neelly (K-State), while fellow Longhorn Steffin McCarter brought home a gold in the men’s long jump.

Texas Tech’s Chinne Okoronkwo won first in the pole vault (14-02.00/4.32m) as the junior will look to win gold in her second event of the championship Sunday in the triple jump.

The final event of the day, 3000-meter steeplechase, saw Oklahoma’s Sarah Scott win her second title in the event in as many years, while Oklahoma State’s Ryan Smeeton won the first gold medal for the Cowboys in the steeplechase since 2000.

The final day of competition will start at 2:30 p.m. CT, closing out the remaining field events, as running events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. CT.
