Norman, Oklahoma – K-State for the women and Iowa State for the men jumped out to an early lead in team scores after the first day of action at the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Wildcats scored 25 team points, while the Cyclones captured 34.
Day one of decathlon competition ended in a tie for first between a duo of freshmen in Texas Tech freshman Axel Hubert and Oklahoma freshman Kristo Simulask at 3942 points each. The women’s heptathlon leader through the first day, Ashtin Zamzow (Texas) holds a 33-point lead atop the scoreboard with 3482 total points.
The heptathlon leader, Zamzow, captured gold in the javelin throw with a toss of 159-04/48.73m, while fellow Longhorn Trevor Danielson earned a first place finish with a throw of 244-08/74.48m in the men’s javelin competition. Danielson recorded a career-best and a facility record with his first place launch.
In the 10,000-meter race, Iowa State’s Cailie Logue captured her first Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field title, winning the 10,000-meter with an 11 second gap. This marks the first individual champion for the Cyclones in this event since 2014.
On the men’s side, Hassan Abdi (Oklahoma State) made a return to the top of the podium after inching past last year’s 10,000-meter champion, Edwin Kurgat (Iowa State), by 56-tenths of a second and final time of 29:31.42. This is the second title for Abdi after winning the honor in 2017.
Competition for day two is set to begin at 10 a.m. CT with decathlon and heptathlon field and running events.
