Jung, Elder and Wehsener Garner Week 11 Recognition

April 29, 2019

Texas Tech junior Josh Jung collected his first Big 12 Player of the Week honor this season, while Texas right-hander Bryce Elder was recognized as Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. Baylor freshman Chase Wehsener was tabbed Newcomer of the Week. All of the Week 11 honorees were selected by a five-person media panel.

The junior led the Big 12 last week with a .583 batting average, 1.250 slugging average and .737 on-base percentage in the Red Raiders’ four victories. Jung finished a triple shy of the cycle in the second game against Oklahoma State and homered in back-to-back games against the Cowboys. The weekly accolade is the third overall for Jung in his career.

Elder, who previously won the award on Feb. 18 and March 25, struck out a career-high 13 in 7.2 innings pitched – the most for a Texas pitcher since 2010. The sophomore right-hander carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and had a no-hit bid broken up with two outs in the seventh.

Wehsener, a freshman first baseman, hit .429 (6-of-14), while collecting six hits, two doubles, three RBIs and a pair of walks in the Bears’ 4-0 week last week. He delivered a two RBI double on Saturday and added another RBI double on Sunday in the series sweep at TCU.
